Pink Floyd were unquestionably London’s premier psychedelic band, and one of the very few to survive the late sixties & adapt there music & image to achieve phenomenal success throughout the seventies & eighties. This sensational debut album, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, was dominated by Barrett’s compositions. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of psychedelic space rock & established Pink Floyd as the most imaginative of Britain’s psychedelic bands. Two tracks, Interstellar Overdrive & Astronomy Domine, both attempted to create a musical simulation of space travel, and were particularly significant as they pointed the direction in which the band’s music would develop without Barrett. Many of Barrett’s other compositions, like Matilda Mother, The Scarecrow, Bike and Flaming were much shorter and characterised by surreal nonsensical lyrics. Barrett was by now heavily into LSD, which had clearly proved much inspiration for his music, but unfortunately, he rapidly began to lose his sanity. By early 1968 he would often sit on the stage, staring blankly into space, and playing the occasional note. He became increasingly unreliable and impossible to work with, eventually parting company with the group in April 1968, being replaced by David Gilmour.
