A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

This A3/B1 press plays with stunning audio aside from a little interference at the start of each side which you always find anyway on these early pressings.  So much of this album plays 'as new'.  The gatefold and lyric inner are also in exceptional condition.

This is a lovely example of this album and it retains an impressive glossy sheen.  There are only a few very faint sleeve removal hairlines in each side and there are no scratches or marks at all.  There is not very much spindle wear so this record has certainly not been played that much.  The labels and run out grooves are also in sublime condition.  This is one of the 'cleanest' early pressings you will find.

Play grading  

As any Floyd collector knows 'Signs Of Life' always has some interference on these original pressings, it is nigh on impossible to find one that plays perfectly.  However, whilst this one does have some light crackle for the first minute the remainder plays with great clarity and is one of the 'cleanest' versions I have heard in quite some time.  It is from the keyboard section onwards that the audio plays very clearly and with only very minor 'background'.  There is just a little more light static towards the end.

'Learning To Fly' plays with stunning clarity and depth from the very first groove.  There are no clicks or pops and the playback is 'high end'.  You could not find a better version as from start to finish there is quite simply no interference at all.  The definition of the audio is so good and of course it has such a deep strong bass sound.  It easily grades as Near Mint and the fade out is very near perfect apart from a couple of crackle sounds literally at the end..

The intro on 'The Dogs Of War' often has some interference but not here!  There are only a very small number of mega light dust ticks but they are barely audible and hardly classify as interference.  Once the vocal begins the audio continues to play to the same exacting standard and the long mid instrumental section is just stunning!  It plays with incredible power and there is no distortion whatsoever.  The remainder plays with sublime quality and the entire track basically has no interference of any kind.  Stunning!

The quiet intro on 'One Slip' plays to near perfection with only a couple of light dust ticks.  It is a superb start, so clear!  As the track 'gets going' the depth and definition of the audio could not be improved upon.  I cannot stress enough just how superbly this plays and I am confident in saying it plays 'as new'.  Even the fade out plays with fantastic precision.

'On The Turning Away' has an intro the likes of which are so rarely heard today.  It is so quiet and all I heard were a couple of mega quiet dust ticks.  This is audio clarity at its very best!  I am glad to say this quality continues and there is not a single click or pop and no static or crackle either.  The super quiet mid section has a couple of dust ticks, no crackle etc, and then the choral section plays in sublime fashion.  The guitar solo is so powerful and you can turn it up to loud without fear of distortion!  This dynamic quality continues to the very end - the long fade out just has a hint of static right at the end.  A fantastic version that grades as Mint- without question.

As per S1 'Yet Another Movie' has some static/light crackle on the intro but a little more pronounced at times.  This again is common as the opening grooves here will always play with some 'background'.  Sadly this is how vinyl was produced in the late 80s as it was somewhat of a dying medium back then.  As soon as the music properly 'kicks in' the depth and range of the audio is 'high end' and there is no other interference.  The opening verses are Mint- the playback is absolutely stunning and the guitar solo is breathtaking!  To the end it plays with impeccable quality with not one iota of interference.  Apart from the intro this is as good as it gets!

'Round And Around' is also very impressive and has no obvious 'background', just a minimal amount of very light static.

'A New Machine - Part 1' plays with great clarity and this is relatively rare as this quiet track often plays with a fair amount of static etc.  That is not the case here!  For example the silent section at the end of the first verse is exactly that, completely silent.  From then on it plays so clearly and with barely any static.  This is definitely one of the finest examples of this track that I have ever heard.

'Terminal Frost' is majestic!  It a real highlight and is Mint- from the very first groove.  We're always waiting for the mid instrumental section and it does not disappoint.  The build up is sublime and the power and depth of the music just envelops the room and the sax section is also stunning.  Turn it up to 11!  This plays as well as it did when first released back in '87 and is like this to the very end.  A mind-blowing version!

'A New Machine - Part 2' is nigh on perfect with only 2,3 of the lightest dust ticks imaginable.  Mint- again.

The classic 'Sorrow' has only 3,4 light static ticks at the very beginning (they are not clicks!) and the remainder of the intro exhibits wonderfully deep audio and no real 'background', it plays fantastically well.  As the percussion comes in there is no let up in quality and this mesmeric quality continues through every verse with no interference whatsoever.  The guitar section is so powerful and if there is any distortion it is only very minor.  This is a stunning version of this track and provides a very strong end to this often underrated album.  There is just one static tick on the fade out.

In summary I honestly think it would be difficult to find an early pressing as good as this.  If you accept the static/crackle at the beginning of each side as a given then the quality of the remaining tracks is of a superlative standard.  The sonic quality is so good and the depth of the audio equally so.  A stunning album.  The gatefold and lyric inner are also very impressive.

The Gatefold

This is one of the most impressive versions of this cover that I have seen in a long time.  The edges have only a couple of small 'rubs' and the wide spine is in fantastic order with no wear.  There is barely any corner wear which is a rarity and the opening edge has no handling wear at all.  Both the front and back cover are incredibly clean with no marking, they could not look any better!  The inside of the gatefold is immaculate and this is a superb example of this gatefold without question.

Lyric sleeve

This is in lovely condition and has no splits or tears.  There are only a couple of minor rubs on the edges and only minimal wear (very minimal!) on the bottom two corners.  Hardly worth a mention really!

The labels

They are both extremely clean with no marking or writing and only a minor amount of spindle wear on the S2 label.
