Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule and barely registering. Another from the one-owner-from-new collection and again, appearing hardly played, and if so, with due care. The main sleeve cover protected, the record stored in a replacement soft-lined inner. This one has no writing or stickers.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Album number13 and the first without Roger Waters. Keyboardist Rick Wright is listed more as a guest also, but plays a significant role. Many consider it a strong return to form after the downbeat previous album, it again sold well. With the CD format now established, many copies were sold on the digital format, so less abundant on vinyl than previously. This a superb copy, again hardly played by the one previous owner. Cover-protected and very well pressed with little unwanted. Copies in this condition are at far more of a premium. Inside the cover were press cuttings from 1988 that include one by the late, great John Peel that add an extra special history to this period of Pink Floyd.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, fairly smooth surfaces. This one has the very wide spine. Printed and made in England, includes the graphic/lyric card inner sleeve. Also the interesting press cuttings (that obviously were not part of the set, but nice to have anyway).

Cover Front: A mild crease on the spine hardly registers, also one on the right edge towards the top. Little else to fault apart. This retains superb deep, fresh colour with no fading and barely rubbed, a tiny speck trace near the right edge only. Cover-protected by the one-owner-from-new, no sticker issues or writing, they are rarely seen much better.

Cover Back: Two quite fine edge creases, little else, these thicker, more ‘boxy’ covers seldom escape with fewer. A superb back to match the front, this was the age of the bar code of course. The lack of rubbing and ring wear makes both sides hugely attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate and ultra fresh with barely anything to fault.

Top Edges: Both thick, straight, flat and flush with no rubbing.

Bottom Edges: If anything, even better, these storage edges look as-made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is immaculate. The back entrance edges are clean, very sharp with barely any thickening, even as seen viewed end-on. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Wide, robust and in stunning practically mint condition as-seen. Solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn with no fading or scuffs. This vulnerable, thick original spine will rarely be found better.

Corners: All corners are again in supreme condition, unrubbed with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this wear-prone 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: an unlined card lyric/graphic inner that reminds of new. Unrubbed, creased with all edges solidly intact with no repairs. The side entrance has a deep recess to record removal, this area immaculate with no creasing or thickening. Like his other albums, the one owner stored the record inside a replacement soft-lined inner, hence both record and this inner are virtually pristine.

The Press Cuttings: No Grade: they are not part of the album, but great items to own from this time. One by John Peel from ‘The Metro’, the other from the ‘Evening Standard’. These cuttings hardly aged, the larger ones with a single neat fold, the small one is a continuation of the Peel piece.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy again appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. So many of these are littered with marks from the hard inner sleeve, but the owner again put this copy inside a replacement soft-lined inner to protect its surfaces. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb, later-era Pink Floyd album plays up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The odd sporadic tick is near impossible to avoid on another typical prog album with some very quiet passages. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
