Description
This is an overall fine copy from a 1984 reissue of a 1973 comp/reissue of the first two LPs by Pink Floyd, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) and A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). It should be noted that this isn't a straight reissue of Piper: the version of "Astronomy Dominé" is from the live disc of the 1969 LP Ummagumma, and the linking sound effect between the first two tracks on side 2 is faded out. These decisions are all the more curious given that the original U.S. issue of Piper on the Tower label was quite different from the U.K. version: three tracks ("Astronomy Dominé," "Bike," and "Flaming") were omitted on the Tower issue, the single "See Emily Play" was added, and the track sequencing on both sides was reshuffled. A Nice Pair undid these changes, but the proper U.K. version would not see release in the States until the late 1980s. (My own copy of Piper is a late '70s U.K. reissue I mail-ordered when I was in high school.) Besides (mostly) having these two groundbreaking LPs in one package, this version does have a typically eye-popping photo collage by Hipgnosis to recommend it.
The gatefold jacket is in very good overall condition with some rippling and light staining at the openings (presumably from water), some unrelated staining in one upper corner and along the upper seam on the front cover, and light creasing in the bottom corners (VG+). Disc 1 has a few fingerprints and some light scuffing, and it plays with occasional light surface noise. Disc 2 has some light staining and scuffing, and it plays with some light surface noise. Overall EX(+).
I’m helping a friend sell his personal collection. I have play graded (spot checked) discs. The jackets will be shipped in plastic sleeves with the discs removed from them.
