PINK FLOYD : A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS
On offer here is an excellent very rare first Mono pressing of A Saucerful of Secrets. It of course has the famous blue/black Columbia label - complete with E.J. Day flipback laminated cover. Whilst there are a few hairlines and a couple of deeper ones on Side One the actual audio is of a very high standard.
Being a first mono issue Gilmour is written as "GILMORE" on both the record label and cover. It is also one of the earliest mono records pressed as O and M are two of the earliest stamper letters.

Visual grading
For an LP approaching half a century visually it really is in excellent condition. There are some faint hairlines but nothing to worry about. There is a slightly deeper one across the first track but this barely affects the audio. You would expect some deterioration in quality of the vinyl but this is honestly one of the best I have seen and for its age I would say it is remarkable just how good it looks. It has obviously been very well looked after.
Play grading Incredibly there is hardly any lead in static prior to 'Let There Be More Light'. A few seconds in there are three faint clicks but thereafter it plays extremely well with only the lightest of static here and there. There are no further pops or clicks just a little distortion perhaps. However, this is probably due to me playing it through my stereo system rather than a mono one. Overall the audio quality is excellent on the first track and plays with great clarity. Again there is almost no static at the start of 'Remember A Day'. The quieter sections play superbly well with hardly any interference. 'Set The Controls...' is quite simply stunning. For such a quiet track it plays with amazing clarity and with absolute minimal static and distortion. No clicks or jumps at all and a joy to listen to! 'Corporal Clegg' does play with some distortion and I also heard one click. Apart from that it plays well with no other interference.
'Saucerful...' on Side Two opens very quietly but then you hear three clicks and three/four more soon after. However, the background is very quiet and in my opinion is still a great listen. The remaining two thirds of the track is stunning with hardly any background noise and plays so cleanly for 48 years old! 'See-Saw' continues with the same quality with no clicks/jumps, a fabulous listen. The intro to 'Jugband Blues' is stunning, no static at all! It is probably the best I have ever heard on a mono pressing. The clarity and separation is astounding and almost zero static.
In summary for its age this very early mono press is in astounding condition and is probably the best I have heard. Yes there are a few clicks at the start of 'A Saucerful of Secrets' on Side Two but that is the worst you can say for the LP. For the majority it plays so cleanly and with almost complete silence between tracks which is so rare. When you think how poor a condition many of these mono pressings are in it is becoming rarer to find one like this. I was also amazed to hear just how loud this vinyl played through my stereo system. It lies perfectly flat on the turntable and would be a great addition to any collection.
Laminated cover
The laminated Ernest J. Day flipback cover is one of the best I have seen for a mono pressing with only minor shelf wear. The three flipbacks are in excellent shape with only minor creasing and no staining which is so common with them. The edges and thin pinched spine are in superb condition apart from a little wear on the top edge. The front cover is in excellent shape with hardly any creasing. There is a little rubbing on the corners and as to be expected a small amount of handling wear to the opening edge. I must repeat how good the flipbacks are as so often they are stained with dirt gained through the decades! On the flipback top right is 'File under Popular : Pop Groups' and underneath is SX 6258. Overall a wonderful looking mono cover that has been very well looked after.
Labels
The blue/black labels are in excellent condition with some spindle lines. At the bottom of the label it states "Made in Gt. Britain" and around the edge "The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited".
Inner sleeve
The original inner sleeve is included and has the reddish brown printing on cream coloured paper advertising "Piper" and "Sgt Peppers" amongst others. It is in superb shape with no splits or tears, only minor creasing. Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system
