RARE very first UK stereo pressing of Pink Floyd`s epochal psychedelic masterpiece "A Saucerful Of Secrets" on Columbia Records (May 1968). "Syd Barrett was the creative force on Pink Floyd’s debut, but in the year between Piper and their follow-up in 1968, he was demoted to a merely ancillary member, writing only one song and playing on only a few tracks. New member David Gilmour took over guitar duties, and Roger Waters stepped forward as the band’s primary songwriter. You can hear his influence immediately on “Let There Be More Light,” the shapeshifting opener whose ominous chorus foretells the demonstrative and dramatic heft of Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.
Even better is “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” a tense incantation whose power derives from its understatement. The song constantly threatens to explode into interstellar overdrive, but never does; it’s all the more effective for being so insistently coiled. That change in dynamic suggests a much more confident and capable band, yet the various aspects of Saucerful of Secretsnever quiet gel the way they do on Piper. EX++ to MINT- COVER in near-impeccable condition. Please see photos for details.
- Originally first-pressing Columbia Records tri-fold flipback sleeve, date-stamped "6807" (July 1968) on back cover (at bottom right).
- Very light record imprint on the laminated front cover.
- Superficial crease (1 inch long) to bottom edge (at right).
- A few small creases to the spine.
- Minor corner bend on the back cover (at bottom right).
- Includes the original, custom-printed Columbia Records inner sleeve in MINT- condition.
EX++ RECORD, carefully played a few times only.
- Near-perfect vinyl on both sides, with impeccable audio reproduction throughout.
- A few superficial hairlines, most of which are from sleeve removal.
- Lightest background crackle in between some tracks.
- Original Columbia Records first issue labels with "Sold in U.K. subject to resale price conditions" reference. Only a few light spindle lines per side.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "YAX 3633 - 1" and "YAX 3634 - 1".
- Mothers/Stampers: "1 / G" and "1 / R".
Note: With its "G" stamper, side one was one of the first batch of 300 "Saucerful" records ever pressed, while side two ("R") is from series 300 to 600!
- This copy of Pink Floyd`s "A Saucerful Of Secrets" is hereby certified to be an original, very first UK pressing, released in May 1968.
PLEASE NOTE: Not to be compared with the more-often-than-not substandard vinyl on offer on eBay, this item is in honestly-graded EX++ condition. You will NOT find another original first pressing of "A Saucerful Of Secrets" as nice as this one - especially at this price: "True value for money" is the motto here!
