Atom Heart Mother 1G / 1G 1st Press (No EMI logo)

This genuine first pressing plays with excellent audio for the vast majority and of course there are no EMI logos on the labels.  It comes complete with the original gatefold and inner that are both in excellent condition.

Visual grading

This vinyl is extremely clean and has only a very small number of sleeve removal hairlines.  It is without doubt one of the cleanest I have seen in a long time.  It does have two hairline marks on S1 that are a little more obvious but there are no scratches.  S2 in particular is visually stunning and both sides still have a lovely glossy sheen.  You can see that this vinyl has always been carefully handled and the run out grooves are also very clean.  This first pressing looks so much better than nearly all the ones you see today!

Play grading  

The classic title track 'Atom Heart Mother' begins with very clear audio and only a light static in the background.  There are no clicks or pops.  This is a very impressive opening and it continues in the same way.  There are so many quiet sections and yet they all play with very similar clarity.  During the first guitar solo you can hear the odd crackle type sound but as this is a louder section they are largely in the background.  The quiet choral section that follows is stunning - the clarity is exceptionally good.  There is barely any static which is incredible when you consider how quiet this section is.  Let's be honest you expect some interference on a vinyl approaching 50 years but the vast majority of this opus plays with sublime clarity and depth with only light background static here and there.  There is nothing that stands out to make you think 'darn I wish that wasn't there!'.  So yes some light intermittent static but overall an excellent version that I reiterate has no clicks or pops!

'If' on S2 begins with some light crackle for a few seconds but disappears as soon as the vocal begins.  It then plays very clearly but there are about 3/4 clicks and a couple of crackle sounds.  'Summer 68' plays with stunning quality overall with only a hint of quiet static on the intro.  Thereafter the audio is superb and plays with near perfect precision.  I love the depth of the sound on this track and definition also.  You can hear all the instruments so clearly on a good copy and this is certainly one of the cleanest I have heard in a long time.  You can hear the bells very clearly on the 'Fat Old Sun' intro - just a little static on the following section.  It then plays with great sound, no clicks or pops and very little static.  This is a very impressive version and the end guitar section is stunning.  So strong and vibrant with no distortion on the top end whatsoever and no 'background' on the fade out either.  'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' plays very clearly from start to finish.  There is some background static here and there but it doesn't intrude on the audio in my opinion.  In fact the vast majority plays with no interference and is a superb listen.  This track definitely grades as Ex+ and much of it better than that.  There are no clicks or pops.  Of course it has the continual drip at the end which will continue if you have a manual turntable.

The Gatefold

The original G&L gatefold is excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  So many are found in poor condition today but this is certainly not one of them!  Only the two bottom edges have some rubbing and the top two are very clean.  The wide spine has a few small rub marks but it remains 100% legible and is much cleaner than many you see!  The corners have a little wear mainly on the bottom two.  There is very minor marking near the top edge of the front cover and a very small '78' has been written top left.  Aside from that the cover is extremely clean and the back cover and inside of the gatefold are extremely clean with no marking.  The inside has '7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse etc' printed bottom left as per the first pressings.  The opening edge is super clean with hardly any handling wear.  Overall an excellent example.

Inner sleeve

The original EMI/Harvest inner sleeve is no longer poly-lined but has no splits to any of the sides.  There is just some light creasing and a couple of tiny tears on the top edge.

The labels

The yellow/green Harvest labels have no marking/writing and are extremely clean.  As stated there are no EMI logos as per the first pressings.  There is some spindle wear although not an excessive amount, very clean examples.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
