Description
This is a very very early first pressing of Atom Heart Mother in truly excellent condition. On pinkfloydarchives.com it has it as no 3 on their matrix list so you can see this is a real collectors' item. It has also obviously been looked after extremely well such is the quality of the vinyl and the gatefold. I can barely see a hairline under a bright light and it retains that glossy sheen of new vinyl. I can only detect a couple of small marks on the vinyl and they have no affect on the audio quality at all.
3) SHVL 781 A-1G H 1 2 / SHVL 781 B-1G A 2 (both stamped)
Having play tested the LP in its entirety I can confirm this is one of the best I have heard and has remarkable audio for 45 years old.
The title track begins with no lead static. There is just one small click near the beginning but after that the audio is stunning. There is hardly any background noise just the faintest of static but it in no way affects the listening enjoyment. When you consider how quiet the majority of this track is the audio is sublime. It is most definitely one of the best I have heard. During the quieter sections all you can hear is the music, no background noise whatsoever, the audio plays with a deep rich clarity. Wow!
Side Two plays with much the same quality. There is just slight static during 'If' but is in now way obtrusive. 'Summer '68' is quite simply one of the best I have heard, absolute minimal interference. Again the quality of 'Fat Old Sun' is stunning and is no exaggeration to say it sounds like new. 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' plays with almost the same quality, just the lightest of static but perhaps I'm being too harsh in even mentioning it! Of course as any fan knows on a manual turntable the drip at the end will continue indefinitely unless you lift the needle off.
The G & L gatefold is in excellent condition with only very minor shelf wear. There is a little rubbing on the top and bottom of the opening edge and the spine but overall the edges are extremely clean and have had very little handling. The gatefold is very clean and has no writing or marks and is certainly one of the best I have seen especially for such an early first press. The wide spine has some wear but nothing major at all. Being a first press it says "7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781" in the lower left hand corner.
The yellow harvest labels are in fantastic condition with almost no spindle wear and of course being a first press there is no EMI logo on either side. It also comes complete with its original polylined inner as can be seen on one of the photos advertising 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Ummagumma' amongst others.
This vinyl will no doubt command a lot of interest and being one of the first issues of the first pressing it is so so rare to find in this condition. It is certainly one of the best, if not absolute best first pressing I have ever heard.
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system.
Harvest SHVL 781 // A-1G H 1 2 / SHVL 781 B-1G A 2
I would grade the vinyl as Near Mint
The gatefold is Ex+
The labels are Near Mint
The polylined inner is Ex+ (no rips just some creasing)
