Pink Floyd : Atom Heart Mother A-1G / B-1G 1st Press 1970 No EMI Logo

This genuine first press plays to a very high standard with hardly any intrusion.  This is the one Floyd album I find that is near impossible to find in Near Mint condition because there is always something!  However, this is easily one of the finest versions I have heard in a long long time.  The epic title track on S1 has only 4/5  seconds of static that is a little intrusive but in my opinion that is the obvious background across the entire album.  There are no clicks or pops and if S1 is very impressive then S2 is stunning!  The clarity and depth can hardly be faulted and as always I have listened to every track in full.  The vinyl is in STUNNING condition and has clearly been so well looked after and only lightly played.

The gatefold is also in superb shape with only very minimal wear and is the finest example I have seen in a long time.  Non-laminated of course and yet it has kept its original shape and structure perfectly.  The poly-lined Harvest inner sleeve is another stunning feature of this album!

This is a 'genuine' first pressing because it has The Pink Floyd on the labels and no EMI logo on either side.  'Fat Old Sun' on S2 is credited to Lupus Music only and of course it has the A-1G / B-1G matrix.  The 'water drip' continues into a locked groove at the end of S2 also.

Visual description

The vinyl is visually stunning with a lovely glossy sheen and no marks or scratches.  Under a bright light I can only see a small number of ultra faint hairlines and there is nothing that stands out.  There is no groove or surface wear and the run out grooves are super clean also.  The Harvest labels are stunning and have hardly any spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on the epic title track 'Atom Heart Mother' is so quiet, it's just a steady hum basically, and yet the clarity is amazing.  There is no background and the opening brass section is equally as impressive, a couple of barely audible dust ticks at most.  The first 'chorus' plays beautifully and the next quieter passage has no intrusion either.  The motorbike plays perfectly (!) and whilst there is a little intermittent static for a few brief seconds during the first violin passage it isn't that intrusive.  The first long 'choral' vocal is so quiet and yet it plays so clearly with only a couple of minor ticks.  It continues in much the same way and the clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is superb.  Apart from that one brief section this is easily one of the cleanest versions I have heard in many a year.  As Floyd audiophiles will testify it often plays with a 'muddied' type sound quality but that is certainly not in evidence here, like I say the clarity is very impressive.  There is one static type click a little further in but that's the only other interference really.  The repetitive section towards the end plays with sublime quality and the next quieter section is on the same level.  As you reach the Silence in the studio vocal the playback is stunning and the following violin section again plays with exceptional clarity, just a hint of mega light static for a couple of seconds.  The closing 'choral' section plays with infinite quality with no background and the crescendo ending has no inner groove distortion at all.  Understandably it's hard to grade a near 24 minute opus with so many different sections.  I would say it ranges between Ex+ and Mint- but with one very brief VG passage.  A superb version overall though.

The acoustic intro on 'If' is close to perfect with only a couple of light statics and Waters' opening vocal is flawless.  The second verse has just a modicum of minor background static but nothing intrusive.  Gilmour's solo has barely any static and the remainder plays with great clarity and... no intrusion.  From start to finish there are no ticks, clicks or pops and Near Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

'Summer '68' plays very clearly from the outset - the piano intro plays with exceptional clarity and Wright's first vocal is just as impressive.  The chorus is stunning in every sense and it continues to play with genuine quality from that point on.  There is no interference and I cannot praise this version highly enough, the sonic quality is breath-taking!  As it descends intro the quieter section towards the end there is not one iota of background and the final vocal / instrumental is 'as new' - this classic track is Mint- at the very least.

The church bells intro on 'Fat Old Sun' play with sublime clarity and Gilmour's opening vocal is just as strong and clear.  This opening section is so quiet and especially just after Mason comes but this section also plays with stunning clarity, just a couple of mega quiet statics.  It's an old classic this track and may well be the most 'complete' version I have ever listened to.  Gilmour's solo is incredible and again Mint- is well deserved.  There are a couple of very quiet ticks on the fade out but that doesn't take away from the overall sound.  The church bells outro plays perfectly.

Admittedly 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' may not be a track you would play too often but the audio itself is very impressive.  One minor static on the first 'vocal' and a handful of super quiet ticks on the following piano piece that's about it.  The next section is even quieter and yet the clarity is phenomenal!  It continues in the same way and yes I played the entire 13 minutes so that I could grade correctly.  From start to finish the clarity of sound is superb with only a very small number of minor statics and there is nothing intrusive.  I will grade as Near Mint but the majority is better than that it has to be said.  The more musical end piece is an example of that, stunning clarity and depth through this entire section.

The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve

This cover is notoriously found in poor condition but not this one!  It has been preserved so well and has only very minimal shelf wear.  The top edges are perfect and the bottom edges have only light wear next to the corners.  The wide spine has hardly any wear and remains 100% legible (for once!) and all corners are in excellent order with very little wear.  The opening edge is in fantastic condition also, it is practically 'as new'.  The front cover is extremely clean with just one tiny 'white' mark next to the right edges and perhaps just a minor hint of discolouration next to the top half of the spine and along the top edge but really it is so so minor.  The back cover is again very clean with only a little marking next to the spine and some light ringwear.  The inside of the gatefold is immaculate with no marking at all.  One of the best you will find.

The original Harvest inner is in superb shape with no side splits or tears, no marking and barely any creasing.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
