Delicate Sound of Thunder

This rare very early first press double vinyl LP is in stunning condition and is one of the best I have ever heard.  Released in the UK in 1988 it has only been played a couple of times as confirmed to me by the previous owner.  He also placed the vinyls in polylined inners so as to preserve the 'as new' quality of the vinyls.

Visual grading

Both vinyls retain that lovely glossy sheen of new vinyl which is hardly surprising as they have always been contained within polylined inners and played only twice at most.  I can only detect a couple of faint hairlines and are in pristine condition.  There are a couple of spindle lines on Sides 1 & 4 and zero on 2 & 3 - they are visually stunning and as my play grading confirms they both play with superb quality also.

Play grading

'Shine  On...' starts Side One with minimal lead in static, very quiet, and then plays with near Mint quality throughout.  There is a just a touch of the lightest of static here and there but is so much in the background as to be totally negligible.  You will often find this on new vinyl.  Turn the lights off, turn it up loud and you can immerse yourself in the music, it feels like you are there!  What always strikes me with this LP is how 'loud' it was recorded and how high in the mix the bass is and in my opinion this is one of the best produced live albums ever.  The quality continues on the remainder of the side.  This audio plays with a depth and clarity you only find with well preserved vinyls and plays practically as new confirming how well it has been looked after the last 28 years.

'Sorrow' on Side Two has a little more static at the beginning than S1 and also two light clicks about one minute in.  The rest of the track plays without fault and sounds superb.  The same goes for the rest of the side with 'On The Turning Away' being a real highlight.  The audio is again stunning and the quiet intro has almost zero static, it sounds sublime as does the remainder of this classic song.

'One of These Days' on S3 has a couple of light clicks yet still plays to a very high standard and with no other interference.  The intro to 'Time' simply plays with stunning Mint quality and is true for the remainder of the side.  Audio does not get better than this!  Despite the two faint clicks at the beginning this side qualifies as Mint- such is the quality.

'Wish You Were Here' has a couple of light clicks right at the start and then plays beautifully.  'Comfortably Numb' also has two dull clicks but still plays with Near Mint quality.  The guitar solo plays superbly, again just turn it up loud!  'Run Like Hell' ends the LP with fantastic sound again and no interference at all.

  If not for the handful of clicks this LP could easily be graded as Mint-, the minus being used as it is not sealed!  The fact there is barely any static show how little the vinyls have been played which is so rare for an LP nearing 30 years of age.  Any Floyd fan would not be disappointed with the quality here and it would be a great addition to any collection.

Gatefold cover

The gatefold cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  The edges and wide spine are in superb shape although the corners do have a small amount of rubbing.  There are a few small creases around the edges and what looks like a sticker mark top right but overall this gatefold has been very well looked after.  It is very clean and the inside is in superlative condition.  So often you find this cover in poor condition today and whilst this one isn't quite perfect it is still in excellent shape.

Inner sleeves

Both inners are immaculate and include polylined inners as already stated.

Labels

  The labels are in superb condition with hardly any spindle wear at all.
