Vinyl:  VG+  Play Graded.  Sounds Great!   Harvest Labels are Clean and Bright.  This is the audiophile acclaimed 1973 Harvest 1ST PRESSING, Mastered by Ken Perry and pressed at Capitol's Los Angeles, CA Pressing Plant!!   SMAS 11163.    An Epic ride from start to finish, part elegy for Syd Barrett, part general reflection on Life on Planet Earth, a Prog Rock defining moment.  Personal fave:  The Great Gig In The Sky, which continues to amaze every time I hear it...The Album with the unparalleled distinction of having spent 917 weeks on the Billboard charts...Possibly one of the top 10 Rock Albums of All Time, it is certainly on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.  allmusic gives it 5 stars!!

Cover:  VG  (see photos)  Front, back and gatefold of cover artwork and text are clear and bright, with some shelf and ring wear.  Seams, corners and spine are solid and clean with some wear.  No splits.  No writing.  Spine print is crystal clear.

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?  First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.  First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.   On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. The primary revelation of Dark Side of the Moon is what a little focus does for the band. Roger Waters wrote a series of songs about mundane, everyday details which aren't that impressive by themselves, but when given the sonic backdrop of Floyd's slow, atmospheric soundscapes and carefully placed sound effects, they achieve an emotional resonance. But what gives the album true power is the subtly textured music, which evolves from ponderous, neo-psychedelic art rock to jazz fusion and blues-rock before turning back to psychedelia. It's dense with detail, but leisurely paced, creating its own dark, haunting world. Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.
