Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Just two or three light and faint spindle marks and this copy looks reassuringly little played, which for this huge classic, is something more unusual.

Rarity & What’s Included: Common, I would not insult anyone’s intelligence by stating otherwise. Even the first issues are nothing like as rare as claimed, but finding them in top condition is way harder. This is a standard regular, slightly later pressed complete copy that includes: the record (obviously), gatefold cover with the slightly rarer large manufacturer’s sticker (as seen in close-up), two posters and stickers and a black inner sleeve. This progressive rock phenomenon has sold reportely sold over 50 million units – albit a huge number on the digital format or as countless reissues and revamps. This is a no-frills standard mid-70s copy, what sets it apart a little is the lack of plays and top quality sound it offers. All the component parts are neat with minimal wear. So many of these were played to destruction, often on very average (or less) record players that ruined the massively complex sound. This record plays beautifully with barely anything unwanted – even that difficult fade-in at the beginning and fade-out at the end are quiet and lacking the usual crackle and clicks. So anyone wanting a really nice complete example without the massive outlay of a first pressing, this could be just the one.

Brief Artist & Album Info: An album of such magnitude, it hardly needs any real explanation. Right from the very beginning, this incredible album set it’s stall out to be a class leader. The sound and production is up there with the very best ever pressed into a vinyl record and even today, is regularly used to test high fidelity equipment. The early pressed records are still the audiophile’s choice to experience this evergreen masterpiece, and this copy does a splendid job doing just that. Tnis is a very nice solid, hardly played example with all pieces intact and clean. One to play and enjoy without the huge expense of a first issue – makes perfect sense to me.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High for all the obvious reasons.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with a matt smooth finish. The front edge is open as the adhesive has dried out, I decided to let it be as it now allows storage of the inserts, and also reapplication of any adhesive usually means a cover will wave. This has the standard cut edge here, not the tucked and folded. The original large sticker is clearly seen on the front and in supreme condition. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Very prone to all forms of wear, this front has little. The odd small mark or tiny rub trace that few will ever avoid. The lack of creasing and major rubbing is a bonus and the sticker is pristine.

Cover Back: The back is similar overall with just a little gentle rim impression but barely any hint of ink loss, that a major plus. A small corner tip rub on the bottom right and a few fine surface marks, but this is nice.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault here and both faces look really strong with any blemishes minor.

Top Edges: Both straight with any rub traces tiny, few and faint.

Bottom Edges: Just a fraction more rubbing, but still for a black storage edge, this is minimal.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These are both standard manufacture’s machine cut edges and both are very clean and neat indeed. Both now open which I decided to leave, a good thing in some ways as the contents can now be spread, but this would not be difficult to readhere if deemed necessary. Both crisp and barely worn and with no trimming.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, barely compressed and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. No text was printed on this spine and all the artwork is largely unworn – any rubbing very mild indeed. One minor press mark and a natural very fine central hairline crease has formed simply by opening. Both fold hinges have also retained near full ink cover as well.

Corners: All corner tips have rubs but mostly only small. Being black, how many will not have? Very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very solid excellent – or very close to – example of this famous cover. Personally, I like the ones with the sticker, these are a little more difficult to find and seldom with this piece as perfect as this. Overall, this cover shows less wear than many and I consider somewhat above average. Not for the perfectionist, but many collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): came to me with a lined smooth black inner sleeve, it has a very slight surface sheen but is predominately matt. Barely any creasing and the lining intact as all edges that are guaranteed repair-free. There is NO text on this black inner.

The Posters: MINT(-): not sure where the minus is really, but I rarely state anything is ‘perfect’. Both unmounted and quite possibly hardly even unfolded until I checked and photographed them. They have a matt finish with no splits or tears. The odd tiny mark on the back being ultra critical and natural crinkle. There are no hard creases, only the natural manfactured folds with are both very strong and unstressed. What is nice about them is they are both neatly folded, so many are badly out of alignment and look far more averaege. Although these came with all copies, so many were wall-mounted, torn and discarded, not so many available copies include all four inserts these days.

The Stickers: MINT & EXCELLENT(+): one has a parallel pair of fine semi-creases that barely detract. These are considerably better than many I have seen. These have the ‘FasPrint’ text and ‘Crack Back’ patented lined backs as seen on my photograph. Both are clean and the backing fully intact. These have not been peeled or used and the fronts are both impressively fresh and attractive. So many of these have hard creases by getting caught up in the gatefold cover when closed – these have both avoided this and a lovely looking pair.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and hardly even played making it a very significant factor. Secondly, this one is very well pressed, it may not be the heaviest piece of vinyl ever, but the sound is clean and largely devoid of irritating crackle that blights so many. An album that was mass-produced simply to meet demand, this record stayed in the album charts for 741 weeks and is regularly regarded in polls as the greatest album of all time. Any surface marks are tiny, very few and faint indeed and it has NO penetrating scratches or marks. Not bad at all for such a popular album and this still quite an early one. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This astonishing piece of vinyl history gives a very impressive account of itself and remains one of the most exciting 40 odd minutes ever cut to a long-playing record. It has very little surface sound and even the difficult passages play very well indeed including the heartbeat intro and outro, which are notoriously difficult and most will have some minor (or not so minor) surface sound, clicks or crackle. Few examples will ever play totally silent, the format hardly allows it – it that is demanded, well the digital alternative will offer just that. But the incredible dynanic range, detail and realism will be lost to some degree. When played at volume, that heartbeat when at it’s loudest can actually rattle the windows and even the house foundations. It has incredible deep sound and resonance that is simply not quite present on the CD versions. There are NO groovewear distortions and this plays very quietly overall. The odd sporadic tick can never be ruled out, but few were noted here. A highly complex recording with immense dynamics and details, stunning stereo imagery and pure quality music that will really sort out the less than worthy systems. A record also highly intolerant of old stylus abuse or overplaying on heavy armed turntables, clearly this copy has avoided that. Just looking at the record’s complex groove patterns will tell any ‘vinyl-reader’ this is a phenomenal recording and those jagged grooves can, and do easily damage if not treated with utmost respect. Hence any used copy played on a quality system is essential and getting them is not quite so easy as you may think. When acquired, modern, lightweight and ultra-fine stylii cause little to no wear to records and quite honestly, its pretty difficult to even think about wearing out any record these days (unless played about ten times a day for a year). I am more than familiar with the sound of this album and know most all of the notes in my head already. Its a roller-coaster ride of mega-fidelity sound and pure musical genius. Blistering peaks of high and low frequency sound, technical perfection, excitement and sheer wonderful entertainment. An album that opened many eyes and ears and introduced many to the earlier Pink Floyd catalogue and progressive rock in general. It helped stimulate the sales of better quality hi-fi systems too – and yes this got me hooked VERY fast. In my teenage years and into my twenties, I did not spend my money on cars, I bought and upgraded my stereo systems up to a full active Linn and Naim setup that cost me a vast sum. Albums like this made it all worthwhile and the sheer drama and details embedded into a first issue of this groundbreaking masterwork are beyond words – just listen for yourself. This is a splendid looking, albeit standard example copy that I feel very sure will thrill many. The vinyl record takes you into the recording studio itself and offers the definitive sound the band, engineer and producers wanted. With the complete package on offer, it’s a fine all-round example that should please most collectors and music lovers and merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
