Meddle 1U/1U

This first pressing plays with very impressive audio and has only been lightly played.  A beautifully clean vinyl you won't find many better than this and it also includes an excellent fully textured gatefold with a very clean spine!

Visual grading

The vinyl is in beautiful condition and is in my top 3 of the cleanest first 1U/1U pressings I have seen.  S1 is immaculate and looks 'as new' and S2 is not far behind with only a couple of faint hairlines and one tiny (and I mean tiny!) light scuff mark.  This has no affect on the audio.  Unsurprisingly it still has a very impressive glossy sheen.  Hardly played there are only 3/4 very faint spindle lines on each label and the run out grooves look as good as the day when first released with the matrix numbers being 100% legible.  This is one visually stunning vinyl!

Play grading  

The intro on 'One Of These Days' has a little background static but it is in no way excessive like on so many first/early pressings.  I also heard one click just after the bass starts.  This section plays very cleanly but with a little 'background' again.  Once the track 'gets going' the audio is of an excellent standard and plays with great power and no distortion on the top level.  The 'wind' can be heard perfectly on the end section with no obvious static.

'A Pillow Of Winds' plays with stunning precision throughout.  With only one faint click and a small number of mega light dust ticks on the intro the audio is exceptional throughout and rare to find on a genuine first press.  It would be difficult to find clarity better than this and even the long fade out has next to no 'background'.

'Fearless' is absolutely stunning from start to finish.  With no interference this easily grades as Mint- the sound clarity and depth of the audio could not be any better.  Of course it has many quiet sections and yet they all play with the same immaculate quality.

'SanTropez' is equal to this and again has not one iota of interference bar a couple of barely audible dust ticks on the fade out.  This is audio of the highest quality and again cannot fail but impress.  In a word...stunning!

The quirky 'Seamus' ends S1 with superlative quality again.  So often final tracks have some interference but this plays to near perfection.  There is just a hint of background static but it is exactly that, in the background and so quiet as to be 100% negligible.  An exceptional end to a side displaying Near Mint audio or better for the vast majority.

'Echoes' as is so often the case does have some light crackle on the intro but it does not last long and is soon replaced with minimal static only.  The music still plays very clearly and there are no clicks or pops.  The first vocal section plays with great definition and clarity and with such a strong bass sound the playback is stunning.  The long instrumental section that follows is also of a fantastic standard and rarely have I heard such power and depth on a first pressing.  A couple of light dust ticks only the audio is just stunning.  Only a couple of dust ticks during 6-7 minutes of music - wow!  The lead in to the 'whale section' is perfect and it then plays with wonderful clarity and no clicks or pops.  Some light static here and there yes but it is certainly not intrusive and the audio still plays so clearly.  The build up to the final section plays superbly and with hardly any of the distortion that you so often find on the jangling guitar section.  The bass again here is so deep and powerful.  The final vocal/instrumental section is absolutely stunning and the extended quiet ending plays nigh on perfectly with only a hint of 'background' on the fade out.  An incredible end to this classic that displays very little 'background' throughout.

In summary this first pressing for the vast majority plays with exceptionally clear audio.  With only a couple of light clicks and a modicum of light static the clarity and definition is of a very high standard.  And with a very impressive fully textured gatefold this album would add to any collection.

The Gatefold

The fully textured G&L cover is in superb overall condition and the spine, which is so often found badly worn, is fully intact on this one and remains 100% legible.  The edges are also super clean and have only a minimal amount of rubbing and there is also very little corner wear.  The front cover is very clean with only one faint scratch and 3/4 small creases next to the spine.  The back cover is nigh on perfect and the textured inside has only a little fading/spotting along the top edge.  In saying that it is still very clean and there are no obvious marks at all.  The opening edge has no handling wear at all.  Overall this is a lovely example of this gatefold and you won't find many better.

Inner sleeve

The original poly-lined EMI/Harvest inner sleeve has no splits or tears and only a little creasing plus a little fading.  'Ummagumma' and 'The Madcap Laughs' are advertised amongst others.

The labels

The yellow/green Harvest labels are in superb condition with only a minimal amount of spindle wear.  The run out grooves are also beautifully clean.
