Label Conditions: Both in fantastic condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the tiny few spindle traces being ultra fine and faint. An unusual sight to see this very popular Pink Floyd classic in such little used condition.

Rarity : UK copies are not hard to find, this proved a popular album. But the main factor has always been condition and pressing quality. Variable would be to simplistic: a well-known factor for most collectors, especially one of a similar age to myself who remember trying to get a decent pressing from new back in the day. Originally issued right in the middle of the great oil shortage of 1971, thus many records were pressed using recycled (label and all) or ‘mixed’ new and old vinyl. Thus sound quality suffered alarmingly with pressing noises and constant unwanted crackle. I remember clearly to this day, the first copy I ever bought had persistent moderate surface noise throughout the hole album, this was returned to the retailer and changed. The same result, this happened twice more – all were similar. I simply gave-up, the shop told me all were going to be the same from the batch available at the time. I have heard just the same tale from other buyers of the time. This is not heresay or rumour, it is a stone-cold fact – this album is incredibly difficult to find that will offer clean sound throughout that the more discerning and audiophile listeners want. Hence I never have any qualms whatsoever in offering any copy or version of ‘Meddle’ that offers clean and enjoyable sound. This only a very slightly later copy anyway that has the superior fully textured sleeve. This may be a relatively thin pressed record, but it is made with far purer and better quality vinyl, thus the sound is clean and plays with very little, if indeed anything of any real note unwanted. Such issues can never be seen, only heard – so even the cleanest, most umplayed looking copy can often – and regularly will disappoint. So it is always with caution and trepidation I play-grade any copy of this album no matter what pressing or how it looks. This one did NOT disappoint, and these days my analogue equipment is massively more revealing than back in the early 1970s when I was a prog-rock loving teenager. The cover is very nice as well and is fully textured inside and out. It has a lovely shade and appearance and lacking the usual heavy wear many acquire over the years. After some considerable time, a really impressive UK-pressed, and still quite early ‘Meddle’ that comes as close as any standard issue will to doing this evergreen classic full justice.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Most interested Floyd, Harvest and prog collectors will know all about this classic album already, suffice to say, it’s a delicately beautiful record in all departments. Very quiet intros to both sides, equally quiet passages in the sublime ‘Echoes’, this record takes no prisoners in hiding blemishes and defects, so a clean pressed album is one to treasure. As stated above, these are something of a lottery, and the majority will disappoint, thus a full-play becomes even more essential. This has very fine clean sound with little unwanted, the fragile fully textured cover also in lovely condition with just minor edge rubbing, mostly on the storage edges. So a lovely all-round example that can be enjoyed without the usual persistent crackle and noises so many had, especially it seems, the earlier ones.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated, gatefold format and textured on ALL surfaces. The card is thin and soft, thus highly prone to all forms of wear. Printed and made in by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the EMI credited inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The odd minor surface crease and tip rub apart, this delicate, famous, and quite mysterious front has little else to fault. Seldom seen with so little wear or rubbing.

Cover Back: Largely the same with any rub traces tiny and very light indeed. The lack of ringwear and rim impression is a considerable bonus as well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This inside is textured like the outsides and looks superb. This one of the most famous band shots ever made by the Hipgnosis studio.

Top Edges: Minimal rub traces and still quite straight for such soft thin card.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing, still fairly straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked edge (not machine cut), this very thin with hardly any wear. The back edges are clean, both sharp with hardly any wear and minimal thickening. Record enters via the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: This has quite a wide spine compared to some others I have seen. It remains quite upright and uncrushed or compressed but with a gentle tilt to left that is incredibly hard to avoid with such thin card. Very light and gentle patchy rub traces mainly to the top fold, but in real terms, this is almost as light as it gets. The main face and all text show hardly any wear and this fragile spine I would consider near exceptional.

Corners: Minor tip rubbing with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of one of classic and prog-rock’s most uncompromising covers. With so many seen threadbare and tatty, this one on the other side of the cover spectrum, one to hold and enjoy – and the fully textured ones always carry that extra bit of classic in terms of good viewing. This one will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated EMI credited inner sleeve. With only gentle hints of ageing with slightly edge discolouration on the seam adhesive, this has little else to fault with no split edges or creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): very clean, shiny and without doubt, hardly played. Pressed on very pure vinyl, this has no dulling or tell-tale mottle markings on the playing surfaces that often indicate the presence of recycled vinyl. Any surface traces ultra fine, few and faint, one most collectors will enjoy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog classic plays up to and most all exceeding it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Silence for all is a near impossibility but this has little to fault with just the odd gentle reminder – the odd minor gentle tick – you are listening to a vinyl record instead of a squeaky clean digital alternative. Up there with the cleanest of pressings I have heard and hardly anything spoilt the enjoyment of this Floyd classic. For those who want the vinyl experience without the usual crackle or pressing issues so many had, this slightly later, cleaner pressing will more than fit the bill. I can hardly emphasise enough, how incredibly difficult it is to find a clean pressing and little-used copy of this one. A lovely all-round example – cover, inner, record and sound – this sets the bar very high. If anyone has a ‘perfect’ UK standard issue, well treasure it, because they truly are the exception rather than the rule. This a copy I can strongly recommend, unless ‘silence’ is mandatory – and good luck with that.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
