Label Conditions: Both look superb: very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are very few, fine and faint and all evidence points to a very lightly played record.

Cat Number: SCX 6346.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Much rarer as a first issue. This format copy was only briefly available with the one box on the labels. Also this has the green-tinted west facing cover with the three rear external flipbacks. Later copies were flipped, grey and flat-backs. All much easier to find. Lightly played originals are no less easy to find than the previous two Columbia albums that actually do seem more abundant.

Brief Info: A brilliant third album by the early Pink Floyd, the first not to feature Syd Barret. Of the 13 songs, only six are instrumental and this hardly has the feeling of being a soundtrack. Mixed material with some beautiful softer songs and also a couple of really heavy ones too. This a real personal favourite and this being my first issue for ages. Both playing surfaces are ultra clean and shiny with an unusual freshness of a hardly played record – this so unusual for the vintage original Columbia-era Pink Floyd albums. An immensely difficult title with some incredibly quiet passages, thus a little very gentle surface trace sound here and there is close to be unavoidable – especially if being played on a very revealing turntable and ancillary equipment. A striking looking record and still one of the best originals I have ever seen. The cover is not half bad either with only mild and gentle clues to it’s considerable age. As most seen are later issues, finding this 1969 pressing this fine is somewhat unusual and little marred the experience of hearing this Floyd classic again.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. The wraps around the closed folds and ends on three external flipbacks. The back graphic has the green tint with the couple facing west. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the EMI sepia promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity and has NO lifts or blisters. More under light, some moderate dulling is seen around the rim shape, but few will avoid this as a minimum. Any thick record inside a cover for 43 years almost has to leave a mild impression. Four or five mainly light surface edge creases and a gentle rub near the top edge, but little else and this is a very attractive cover front. The right edge has the correct exposed strip, still quite wide and still clean with no grubbiness and barely any hint of wear at all.

Cover Back: This is the rarest of the More cover backs and seldom seen one much better. A couple of minor blemishes: a trace of toning near the centre of the left and right edges – almost the slightest hint of ageing possible being honest. And a fairly light scuff to the centre of the laminate end on the top flipback. Quite simply, when new, these ends are often a little sticky and adhere to protective covers. This the likeliest explanation, anyway, it is quite minor, but may be an issue for the highly discerning collector, so of course, it has to be highlighted. All other aspects of the flipbacks are positive and these are clean, crisp and undamaged with clean ends devoid of the usual grubbiness.

Top Edge: Little short of as made with full laminate coverage that is very smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edge: As above, also very straight for a thin edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Again, practically as made and looking magnificent as I hope my close-up pictures show. Solid, straight with barely any compression – the ends quite deeply pinched in manufacture, both crisp and very neat indeed. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All four show barely any hint of wear at all. Better than excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this rarer original and flipbacked cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Just enough to remind of it’s impressive age and personally, I have no qualms with that. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): rarely seen one of these unlined EMI promo sepia inners better. Clean, fresh, barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably better still. Any minor visual blemishes are within the pressing itself and any stylus marks are minuscule, ultra fine, very few and faint as seen critically under angled light. Any quite popular record of this vintage in this condition has to be considered very impressive. Ultra clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. This has the sheen and lustre of a just pressed record. A copy hardly even played on all the visual evidence and a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Originals of this album are seldom seen this well preserved and clearly little played. Most plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with little to fault. That said, pressing quality is always an issue, and although this is a very fine, it does have a little gentle surface sound on the odd quiet area here and there – but overall, few. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No pops or significant clicks were noted but absolute silence is a massive ask even a brand new copy of this record. Take the introduction for example: this fades into quiet birdsong and takes no prisoners for crackle and surface noise. This plays very well and there are other equally challenging parts further on. Very little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record which is one of my personal favourites within the Floyd catalogue. Still possibly under-appreciated compared to their giant mega-selling titles, but this is the real sound of the early band who were more experimental and dare I say – interesting. I am realistic enough to know the vinyl format on such material and era will rarely ever be totally silent – the mechanics of analogue record replay hardly allows it. So with that in mind, this is a super example and I am certain, even from brand new, this one-owner copy would not have sounded any less impressive than it does now. I am as certain as I can be, this record has not seen light-of-day for decades and honestly, I doubt if this had been played more than twice. An original that will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation. If total silence is demanded, well the digital format will offer just that, but hearing a genuine 1969 copy offers the ultimate experience in realism and feel. A little gentle reminder of what you are listening too is almost part of that experience and there is little more than that on this splendid record.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
