Another from my personal collection! collected over a period of 35 years or more! This rarety has been stored in a case for at least 25 years! Very very scarce in this condition also the fact that this is the earliest and rarest MONO PRESSING! MUCH MUCH RARER AND SOUGHT AFTER THAN THE STEREO PRESSINGS!!

A Saucerful of Secrets is the second album by rock band Pink Floyd, and arguably one of the first progressive rock albums. It was recorded at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, at various dates from August, 1967 to April, 1968. Due to Syd Barrett's declining mental state, this was to be the last Pink Floyd album that he would work on!!

During its difficult recording sessions, Barrett became increasingly unstable and in January of 1968, David Gilmour was brought in. Barrett was finally removed from the band by early March, leaving this new incarnation of Pink Floyd to finish the album. As a result, A Saucerful of Secrets is the only non-compilation Pink Floyd album on which all five band members appear, with Gilmour appearing on five songs (Let There Be More Light, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Corporal Clegg, A Saucerful of Secrets, and See-Saw) and Barrett on three (Remember a Day, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, and Jugband Blues). As well as "Jugband Blues", the album was to include "Vegetable Man," another Syd Barrett song. However, the band believed "Vegetable Man", with its autobiographical lyrics, was unsuitable for inclusion and so it was left off the album. The song was to appear on a single as the b-side to another unreleased track, "Scream Thy Last Scream". Two additional Syd Barrett songs, "In The Beechwoods" and "No Title" were also recorded early in the sessions for the album!!!!.

An image of the Living Tribunal from Marvel Comics can be seen in the cover's upper left corner. "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is the only Pink Floyd song that features all five band members. Keyboardist Rick Wright sings lead or backing vocals on four of the album's seven songs, making this the only Pink Floyd album where Wright's vocal contributions outnumber those of the rest of the band!!!.

Like The Piper at the Gates of Dawn before it, the album contains space rock and psychedelic pop songs. But unlike Piper, which was dominated by Syd Barrett's compositions, A Saucerful of Secrets contains only one original Barrett song - the painfully poignant "Jugband Blues." The song greatly contrasts with Barrett's work on Piper, which was entirely whimsical and child-like. Instead, "Jugband Blues" is a deeply introspective song, containing lyrics which seem to be addressed to the band, when in reality they are directed at the whole world. Oddly, the song's style and structure would be repeated on Barrett's two solo albums - The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (both 1970)!!!.

With Barrett seemingly detached from proceedings, it came down to Roger Waters and Richard Wright to provide adequate material. The opening "Let There Be More Light" penned by Waters, continues the space rock approach established by Barrett, with its mesmeric opening bass line reminiscent of the material found on "Piper." Both "Remember a Day" and "See-Saw" use the child-like approach that was established on their debut. Wright remains critical of his early contributions to the band!!!.

The Vinyl

This is the original!, and more importantly the heavy and thicker type of vinyl!! ,,,which has deeper grooves and are more robust than later pressings!!!! Also the point to note! These original 1968 pressings produce the best audio quality in my opinion due to the fact that the vinyls are much thicker!!!Also the fact that these very rare mono recordings can not be surpassed for their unique sound! (not reproduced on the stereo pressings)!

Initial inspection and also when looked at under a strong light I can hardly see a blemish!!!! The playing surface looks like new!! Any marks that could possibly be seen would be sleeve removal marks!! In strong light i can see very (very) few very fine whispy and minute surface scratches about two or three  very very hard to spot and (non) audio sounding at all!!! This indeed has retained its original super glossy sheen from new!!!!

I have played this vinyl a few times at very high volume on a top system and the audio is awesome!!! This audio is cristal clear and vibrant (no) signs of any grooveware or that this has been overplayed at all) !!! It is all too easy to be critical about this pressing! any who know this album would know that there are many quiet places, It is so rare to find a mono pressing that doesn't produce some static crackle during the quiet places! I have many copies and formats of this album! To start with there are (no) clicks , pops and certainly (no) jumps during the play of this vinyl!!! Points to note! This vinyl has been stored in a case for at least 25 years and I have noticed that on this and others that I have, that a build up of dirt and dust in the grooves that has accumilated over the years causes static ticks\crackle on these pressings (noticable by residue left on the playing surface after play) , and constant cleaning before each play I have noticed the audio gets cleaner! Please note! Please allow for some static crackle that i could hear especially during some quiet places (i mainly noticed this on side 2.) I must emphise that the audio is clear and vibrant! and  on some systems i have noticed that this static is hardly noticable at all!  This plays awesome through out with minimal interfearance !!! This is one of the rarest and hardest to ever find! ORIGINAL 1ST UK PRESS MONO!!40 years old!!

Please note! I always add this disclaimer! I have given my honest opinion when describing the audio quality of this vinyl as usual! Please allow for the odd static tick\crackle here and there (mainly during some of the quieter parts) and certainly not consistant through out the audio! remember that this is a genuine vinyl of  40 years old! ,, and would have been played on a system that was 40 years old!
