Pink Floyd : The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 2/1 2nd Mono Press Blue Columbia Label
This second mono pressing on the famous blue Columbia label plays with superb audio for the vast majority and with barely any interference. There is just one minor skip at the start of S2 and only very minimal light static in a handful of places which in no intrudes on the quality of the listen. There are a couple of clicks but only right at the end of the fade out so hardly intrusive and there is very little inner groove distortion also. Visually it is not perfect but it is certainly not in poor condition by any means and the very impressive audio pays testament to that.
The cover has to be one of the cleanest around today and has only minimal shelf wear. The all important unlaminated back cover is in great condition! As this is a second pressing it has 'File Under Popular : Pop Groups' on the top right flipback. The original EMI inner is included and is in very good condition with only a little wear.

Visual description
The vinyl still has a strong glossy sheen and there are no actual scratches. When you look under a bright light you can see some hairlines but there is only one on S1 and a couple on S2 that are a little more obvious. S2 also has a couple of faint scuff areas but they are superficial and have no affect on the audio. Under a more forgiving light it is visually very impressive and there is no groove wear to be seen. The blue Columbia labels are very clean and still retain their original colour. There is some spindle wear which is restricted to the inner circle area and the KT tax stamp can easily be seen on the S1 label.
Play grading
The intro on 'Astronomy Domine' plays so clearly with only one very quiet static tick, it is as close to perfect as is possible. As the 'sonar' / Mason's percussion comes in the audio is just as strong. Barrett's opening vocal has only a minor touch of background static at the start and is so quiet as to be negligible. It continues to play with great clarity and the first quiet 'section' is so clean with only a couple of minor statics. The following instrumental passage is superb! There is no intrusion as such - just a hint of mega light static but so quiet and very much in the background. Play it loud the audio is so strong and clear and there is no distortion on the top end. The vocal end section is faultless and there is no background on the fade out! From start to finish there are no clicks or pops and it grades as Near Mint- start at the very least.
With complete silence in the dead wax the intro on 'Lucifer Sam' plays perfectly. The opening vocal is practically as good but if I was being super critical there is just a hint of static distortion at the end, hardly noticeable though! What you do notice though is just how strong and deep the audio is during the instrumental section that follows. The next vocal has no interference and it continues to play with great definition and... no interference. There is no 'muddiness' to the sound and each note is so sharp and precise, especially during the instrumental sections. Near Mint- is again deserved.
'Matilda Mother' has only very minimal static on the intro and the opening vocal section is nigh on perfect with no ticks, clicks or pops. From then on the audio plays with great depth and warmth and the mid instrumental is equally as good. The final vocal keeps up this exemplary standard and the end section has no intrusion either - another very clean fade out also. The intro is Ex+ and the rest Near Mint- at the very least.
The intro on 'Flaming' has only a minor touch of very quiet static just before the vocal comes in and the opening vocal then plays very clearly indeed with no intrusion. It proceeds in much the same way with such strong audio and with nothing to detract from the overall 'sound'. The mid instrumental is flawless and the final vocal is as good as the first. Near Mint-
The 'vocal' intro on 'Pow R. Toc H.' has 3/4 light crackles and then plays very clearly and that is very much in evidence during the first piano section. As the volume increases the audio is very strong and there is only the bare minimum of distortion - nothing intrusive basically. There is a lot 'going on' here musically and yet the clarity is quite impressive when you consider this is a mono record being played through a stereo set up. The quieter end section plays very clearly with very little background static and the 'busy' finale is very strong also with no interference either. I will grade as Ex+ overall although that may be a little harsh!
The percussive intro on 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk' is 'as new' and the opening vocal is on a par with that. This final track often suffers from inner groove distortion but the first powerful section plays with very strong audio and you can easily turn it up to max - the playback is superb! There is barely any distortion. The mid section plays with great depth and you really notice how strong and deep Waters' bass is here. The high octane end section is stunning and the final vocal has no background either. Once again I believe Near Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

The familiar intro on the classic 'Interstellar Overdrive' has only minimal light static but does have one tiny jump unfortunately. As Mason comes in the audio is very strong, there is no distortion, and then the first real 'quiet' section plays very clearly with only a couple of minor ticks. From then on it plays with great quality and the playback is superb! Exceptional clarity and depth here and Waters' bass is very much in the foreground. This is another 'busy' track and yet the original sonic quality has still been very much retained. The next quieter section plays so well with no interference basically, just a hint of mega quiet static, and the classic closing section could not play any better. The power and depth of the music here is stunning, the percussive finale has no background at all. I will grade the intro as VG due to that one brief skip but the remainder is Near Mint- in my opinion.
'The Gnome' just has two innocuous and very quiet tick on the intro and thereafter plays with impeccable quality. The clarity here is STUNNING! This is largely an acoustic track and yet the audio is unbelievably clean and fresh. A Near Mint version.
The opening vocal section on 'Chapter 24' plays with great clarity and I noticed only one or two seconds of barely audible static. It continues in much the same way with no clicks or pops and only a minimal light static here and there, nothing intrusive. The long fade out here is very impressive by the way. Ex+
The percussive intro on 'The Scarecrow' is 'as new' I can pay it no higher compliment and Barrett's first vocal has only minimal light static in the background and I do mean minimal! From then on it plays very clearly and as the bass / acoustic guitar end section comes in the audio is very strong and deep. There is a tick and one click at the end of the fade out but it seems a little harsh to downgrade it because of that! Let's say Ex+
'Bike' plays with very strong and clear audio when you consider it is the final track on the album. It regularly plays with a fair amount of static / inner groove distortion but that is not the case here. It is kept to a minimum here and the opening vocal section has no ticks, clicks or pops. The quiet section is stunning and then the 'percussive' section is just out of this world! The clarity of sound here could not be any more impressive and then the 'ducks' play with outstanding quality also with only a couple of ticks rights at the end. This classic is easily Ex+ but many sections are certainly better than that.
In summary this very collectable mono pressing plays to a very high standard with only minimal intrusion. The only real negative is the one minor skip at the start of S2 but aside from that the audio plays very clearly and with very little static. There are no clicks or pops apart from a couple at the end of a fade out. As stated it is not visually perfect but as we know late 60s heavy vinyl was built to last if of course there are no deep marks or scratches. In other words the marks / hairlines here are superficial and I am sure the winning bidder would be very happy to have this in their collection.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
This iconic E.J. Day cover is in excellent condition and has clearly been very well looked after over the last 54 years. It has retained its original shape and structure perfectly with no bending or creasing. The top edge is more or less pristine with only two barely visible 'rubs' and even that seems to critical a description! The bottom edge is very clean with only minimal wear by the right hand corner and the thin pinched spine is so close to perfect with barely any wear on the corners. The top right corner is incredibly clean and as stated the one bottom right just has a little rubbing - the opening edge has only minimal handling wear. The laminated front cover is in lovely condition with only a couple of minor faint creases near the right edge and a small number of very small faint creases next to the spine as is common which you can only see when you hold the cover at a certain angle. The back cover for once is very clean and the grey background has no obvious marking which is a genuine rarity. background is incredibly clean and the area next to the opening edge is also in great condition. The flipbacks remain perfectly attached to the cover and have only minimal marking / staining around the edges. This is a very impressive example overall and I do believe Ex is an honest grade.
The original EMI inner is the one that was included with the first pressing so I guess there was no strict policy in place during the packaging process in the factory! It's the one advertising 'Revolver' and 'The Yardbirds' amongst others. It is in excellent shape with just one tiny split on the bottom edge, a couple of minor 'nicks' on the top edge, minimal marking / spotting and only light creasing.
