Description
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Early 2/2 pressing)
This early stereo release has the black Columbia label with white Columbia label and two EMI logos on the labels. The cover has no flipbacks on the reverse. The audio plays to an excellent standard as detailed below.

The audio is Ex (VG+ in 4/5 areas and Ex+ in many others)

Visual grading
This really is a very clean vinyl. There is only a small amount of spindle wear so it has not played a great deal and the audio quality confirms that. There are a few fine hairlines as you would expect but there are no scratches or marks at all. It has been very well looked after. There are also a couple of radial lines on Side One but they have no affect on the audio. One of the best 2/2 pressings I have seen in a long time.
Play grading
'Astronomy Domine' begins superbly with hardly any lead in static. It then plays with very clear audio and only a little distortion which is very common on these early pressings. There are only two clicks and the clarity is of a very high standard. 'Lucifer Sam' plays with fantastic power and resonance, probably one of the best versions I have heard on a 2/2 pressing. 'Matilda Mother' has a little non-intrusive interference at the beginning and then plays with the same quality as the previous track. Just a few light clicks towards the end. The remainder of the side plays with wonderfully clear audio and very little background noise. There is no loud crackle or clicks to annoy the listener (!) and for an LP of this age it remains a high quality vinyl.
The classic 'Interstellar Overdrive' begins with one pop and some static but then proceeds to play with excellent audio with only light static here and a couple of clicks but there are no jumps whatsoever. Yes there is some light distortion but again this is always prevalent on these early pressings. The sound quality still transports you back to the early 70s! 'The Gnome' and 'Chapter 24' both play with excellent audio although the latter does have a little more static. The final two tracks play superbly well with only some of the ubiquitous distortion again.
In summary this early pressing plays extremely well and has obviously not been played excessively unlike so many others. There are only 4/5 clicks across both sides and no loud crackle at all which is a rarity.
Cover
The G & L cover does have some wear although nothing major. The top edge has a little more shelf wear than the others and the bottom edge has a small split by the opening edge. The thin pinched spine is very clean and remains perfectly legible. The laminated front cover itself is very clean and has no marking and only a couple of small creases. The white back cover has a little marking and some ringwear but is in very good condition for its age. The opening edge is in excellent shape and appears only lightly handled.
Labels
They are in superb condition with hardly any spindle wear. Around the label is printed "EMI Records, Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited. Made in GT Britain".
Inner sleeve
This is in excellent condition although I don't think it the original. It is plain white and has a patent number and Made in England printed on one side. There are no splits to the sides just two very small tears around the centre hole.
