MATRIX NUMBERS

There were around thirteen first pressing issues of The Wall LP. As the metal master tapes (mothers) deteriorated, they were replaced by second generation master tapes. The earlier the mother matrix number, the better is reputed to be the recording.

What is on offer here is a very first pressing taken from the first generation master tapes. 

The very first pressings of The Wall are also characterised by the following features:

Cover Sticker:

·        Some 1st pressings had a transparent sticker on the front cover that says (in black Scarfe lettering): "Pink Floyd The Wall". Some first pressings also came without these stickers. Only a handful of Factory Samples were issued and these came without stickers. 

Front Cover:

·        The Wall is cream coloured, not white, with the bricks outlined in purple.

·        The cover is made from a single sheet of wrap-around cardboard, and is of a thicker cardboard than on later printings. If there is a 'join' seam at the base of the gatefold cover as well as the top i.e. made from two pieces of card, it is not a first pressing cover. There should only be one seam join and that is at the top of the gatefold where the single sheet is joined.

·        The bricks on the front cover are not aligned right to the bottom of the cover.

Back Cover:

·        There is no scancode on the back cover.

Inside Cover:

·        The credits on the inside cover do not list the members of Pink Floyd. It only says "Words and Music - Roger Waters."

·        Inside cover “Produced by” credits are for David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin & Roger Waters. Later pressings have  Roger Waters listed first.

Inner Sleeves:

·        Heavy cardboard inner sleeves with rounded corners and a nine-inch thumb notch. Inside of inner sleeves are light brown - later pressings were white inside

·       The inner sleeves catalogue numbers are on one line in the bottom right corner. Later pressings had the catalogue numbers on three lines. If the inner sleeves have the catalogue numbers on 3 lines rather than 1 line, they are not the earliest first pressings - see scan for the genuine earliest 1st pressing inner sleeve.

Picture label:

·        Text around the top edge of the label starts at 7 o'clock and says:

“All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorized public performance, broadcasting and copying of this record prohibited. Made in Great Britain. EMI Records (U.K.)”

·        Darker blue background to the label than later pressings.

·        Thicker vinyl than later pressings.

Because it was anticipated that this LP would be a big seller, there were around thirteen first pressings of the LP manufactured. Below are the matrix numbers for the earliest three first pressing issues of the Wall.

The very first is the one on offer here and has all of the above features.

Cover: VG only. No seam splits/writings or doodles but has some marks and the inside of the gatefold cover has some scuffs where the sides have been stuck together in the past. Has the original "FACTORY SAMPLE - NOT FOR SALE" sticker on the rear cover.

Inner sleeves:VG+. Top openers – made from thick cardboard with rounded edges. Some minor seam splitting.

Gradings.......

Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches.

Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and more significant scratches.

Fair - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise, it may even jump.

Poor - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc

Bad - The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
