Label Conditions: Both almost as new with just a couple of very faint small spindle traces, all evidence suggests an incredibly lightly played, and still quite early pressed copy.

Cat Number: SHVL 804.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 113 grams. Not heavy by any means, but pressed on quality vinyl, thus the sound quality is fantastic throughout – for me, there is NO more important factor.

Rarity & What’s Included: The album itself is common, and that’s simply being honest – if anyone says different – laugh in their face – even the blue label first issues are far from impossible. This album has sold in excess of 15,0000,000+ copies, by any standards a phenomenal number – hasten to add quickly, not all this vast number would have been on vinyl and this is worldwide figure, so not all UK copies by any means. The very first pressing with the solid blue triangle label is far scarcer but they do show up – but this is NOT that version. This is a standard, no real frills, but complete copy in excellent condition and offers wonderful clean sound throughout. It has both stickers with intact backings (seen in close-up), both posters that are unmounted and a black inner sleeve. A very fine cover with far less wear than most and the record superbly pressed and hardly played. Such copies are harder to find for sure and a great example for anyone wishing to hear this groundbreaking hi-fi masterpiece at practically it’s best without the massive expense of a very first pressing.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Any interested collector will know all about this album I feel certain with little or no introductions needed. A monumental issue that sold in massive numbers worldwide, and even today, this legendary record is still used as a reference test for hi-fi systems. The sound and production is definitive and will make any worthy system really excel with incredible details and dynamics. I play a copy of this album on average 4 to 5 times a year from different sources and I never tire of hearing again. This album really did bring Pink Floyd even more to the public’s attention and sales of their past and future albums were assured thereafter. I would imagine the majority of rock vinyl collectors will have a copy of this one but those who do need a strong complete copy without splashing out vast amounts for the solid triangle first pressing, this should fit the bill. For any younger collector who want to discover what vinyl has to offer, this too would be a wonderful place to start. This has long remained, and will always will be, one of my personal favourite albums ever – a true landmark recording in the history of rock music. I am always delighted to offer any clean complete copy that offers ultimate sound quality, these never quite so easily found as you may think – this really is impressive.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces and the more familiar blacker finish. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd with the front edge ‘cut’ (in manufacture). Includes a black inner sleeve, two unmounted posters and the two FasPrint backed stickers as seen in close up.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh with minimal traces of rubbing or creasing to the unforgiving surface and few marks. Very neatly attractive and folded square. Some variants had stickers, personally, I prefer them without.

Cover Back: Very similar to the front in most all respects with just a trace more rubbing near the bottom edge. The lack of penetrating ringwear is always a major plus on this cover that seldom escapes it entirely.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault here and both faces will be difficult to find better.

Top & Bottom Edges: Any rub traces are very little, light and faint. All straight and meet up flush and parallel – these small details always make the difference for the more discerning collector.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean and, sharp with hardly any traces of wear or thickening. Record and contents are stored within the back edge as the front is closed with a matchine cut edge. This one is glued together and not folded around, this has to be mentioned because very early ones had a tucked and folded front edge which later ones omitted probably to keep costs down and speed up units in shops.

Spine and Text: A practically perfect spine: solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, as stated already, all edges neat, flush and parallel. No text was printed on this spine and all the artwork is pretty much unworn and looks fantastic. It’s unusual to find this cover spine with such little wear or damage, this will also be hard to find better. Even the folds have avoided scuffs and rubbing.

Corners: Mostly light tip rubs with a couple a little heavier. All modest in context of a black cover. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very solid excellent example of this famous cover. Perfect examples may exist but are very hard to find. With any blemising or wear so light on this uncompromising cover, I consider this a very fine example, it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: Little short of MINT. A lovely black polylined inner that the discerning owner even put a Japanese anti-static inner inside for extra protection – this I have left. The has external flipback construction and is practically as made with no creasing or edge splits.

The Posters: Both practically MINT, both unmounted and quite possibly hardly even unfolded until I checked and photographed them. As fresh and clean as when purchased with all folds solid and edges crisp. Although all copies included these, a vast number were mounted, torn and even discarded over the years. So finding a pair practically as-made is not so easy either.

The Stickers: EXCELLENT/EXCELLENT(+): there are many variations of these sticker on the back, and shades on the graphic side vary considerably. These are only marked down a little for a little gentle creasing. In fact these are quite hard to find ‘perfect’, mainly due to the fact when stored inside the cover, they have a tendency to move into the spine fold and become creased. One has only a tiny corner crease (the lighter one) and the other a larger, but light surface crease to one side. The backings are both FasPrint, but one in green ink, the other a pale grey. I was assured by the owner they are as bought which I have no way of verifying of course. The backings are still fully attached and unpeeled. The fronts are clean and still fresh looking. Of all the parts of this set, the stickers are usually the pieces missing or ‘used’. These are fine clean pair, but not pristine.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT / EXCELLENT(++): with nothing more than the odd mega-fine hairline trace or two on side two. A superb visual copy that is ultra clean with excellent shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence, that quite unusual for one of the most popular rock albums ever made. For equally good measure, this one is pressed on top quality vinyl, hence it plays near devoid of anything unwanted and certainly with no invisible pressing issues or nasty pressing noises. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A very inpressive clean copy of this most complex of recordings. Absolute silence is probably almost unrealistic on a ‘standard’ copy. The heartbeat intro and outro are ultra difficult and most will have some minor (or not so minor) surface sound, clicks or crackle. This has minimal traces and it’s been some while since I have heard a better example overall. There is NO groovewear distortions or pressing rasps and this plays very quietly indeed with very little unwanted – it was a real joy to play-grade on this my most revealing turntable I have ever owned. Many do suffer badly from surface sound and sometimes heavy crackle and only a small percentages of copies will play near ‘silent’ throughout. A record also highly intolerant of heavy tracking or worn stylus abuse. Clearly this copy has avoided all that. Just looking at the record’s complex groove patterns will tell any ‘vinyl-reader’ this is a phenomenal recording and those jagged grooves can and do easily damage if not treated with utmost respect. Hence any lightly played copy is essential and getting them is not quite so easy as you may think. When acquired, modern, lightweight and ultra-fine stylii cause little to no wear to records and quite honestly, its pretty difficult to even think about wearing out any record these days (unless played about ten times a day for a year). I am more than familiar with the sound of this album and know most all of the notes in my head already. Its a roller-coaster ride of ultra-fi sound and pure musical genius. Blistering peaks of high and low frequency sound, technical perfection, excitement and sheer wonderful entertainment. An album that opened many eyes and ears and introduced many to the earlier Pink Floyd catalogue and progressive rock in general. It heavily promoted sales of better quality hi-fi systems too – and yes this got me hooked fast. The massive dynamic range and sonic delivery of the music has yet to be equalled on a clean vinyl copy and the experience on a large audio system is simply breathtaking. This is a splendid looking record that I feel very sure will thrill the majority, the odd gentle reminder it is a record is simply being realistic, and this one to really turn up loud if possible. As stated, a no frills standard copy, but when all in such fine condition and the record hardly played, this is a little special. A lovely all-round example that should please many, if not most collectors and music lovers – unreserved recommendation applied – do not underestimate such a copy like this.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
