Label Conditions: Both immaculate: the owner had two copies of this album and he said this copy had never been played. Well I will not argue with that for a second, both look new – ultra clean, fresh and attractive with – as you expect from a previously unplayed record – no spindle marks whatsoever. As always, I played the entire album to check the pressing quality which was equally perfect. I have never heard a better copy of this record, the sound is simply that of the master tape with nothing unwanted. And for those who know this album well, that is some achievement as it has several very quiet passages. Indeed this could be the ultimate upgrade copy for many and if pristine sound is mandatory, this record offers just that.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 125 grams. Actually quite heavy for this album, many are incredibly thin and flimsy, this one solid and something above average.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate: although not selling in the numbers of the previous ‘giant’ Floyd albums, this still hit the top spot in the UK, although American sales were vastly down on past glories. The important factor as always is condition. So often this crackles with unwanted surface noise, but this one offers sublime sound and my play-grade was it’s very first. Not only does this copy look like new, it sounds like it too. Any unplayed or barely run-in Pink Floyd album are scarce.

Brief Info: The final Pink Floyd album to feature Roger Waters, and the considerable skills of keyboard player Richard Wright are absent. In fact it can be argued this is more like a Roger Waters solo album than a full band effort as he is the only member credited with the song writing and performs most-all of the vocals. It received very mixed reviews on issue but still went to No. 1 on the UK album chart. Sales in the USA were far lower than anticipated. A very downbeat concept album about war and a very personal album by Waters. An album that does grow on you with a few plays, but it will never be a major-league Floyd album for me anyway – but of course an essential album for fans and few will be better this superbly preserved example. As stated further up, the owner had two copies and this one had never been played prior to my mandatory sound-check. An immaculate record that could easily pass for new with sound quality to match, this sounds absolutely stunning. A rare opportunity to own an early cut with just one very careful play on the clock, such copies are seen or offered often, so one not to be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being somewhat critical. An unlaminated gatefold format with fairly shiny varnished surfaces. The front has the band and title sticker. Printed and made in England and includes the black inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Practically unworn being fresh, clean with nice shine and attractive. The odd friction rub hint on the sticker seen under light with any surface blemishes or creasing minuscule.

Cover Back: A tiny few ultra small press marks below the word ‘cut’, the only reason for opting for the excellent(++) grading, that apart practically as made.

Cover Inner Gatefold: As made.

Top Edges: Both unworn and very straight.

Bottom Edges: Any rub traces tiny, few and very faint, a small rub on the back right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with no wear at all. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: solid, straight with no compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and even the hinges are unrubbed or worn.

Corners: Any rip rubbing is tiny and light. All retain near perfect shape.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this well-known 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: as made. A solid black polylined inner with a little natural crinkle but little else, this is little short of immaculate and unaged. The record’s removal on play-grade could have indeed been it’s first.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: PRACTICALLY MINT: a grading I will rarely contemplate using even if records merit it. Played just once by myself for a mandatory sound check as I take nothing for granted. An album I know very well since buying a copy on issue and I know pressing quality can be an issue. This plays SUPERBLY!, with practically nothing unwanted. An immaculate visual copy that is ultra clean with an amazing shine, freshness and being more solidly pressed than many I have held. Any surface traces are finer than and fewer than minuscule with point-blank scrutiny under bright angled light and I cannot imagine finding or hearing a better example. Visually this leads you directly back into 1983 when these first appeared in the shops and it should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This visually stunning record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical super-fidelity Pink Floyd album, that was never about to change and this pressing does it supreme justice. Barely even a trace of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing just the way the audiophile listener and collector wants them. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. It is very likely my removal from the black inner sleeve was it’s first since it left the factory. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
