Label/Format: Harvest – customised format with matt surfaces that have a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate, this from a collection of barely played records. The one-owner-from-new put his vinyl collection direct to cassette tape and stored the albums away. Not only that, this is one of the very best pressed copies I have heard to date – and as most fans will know – this is NEVER easy.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderate. Although not selling in the numbers of the previous ‘giant’ Pink Floyd albums, this still hit the top spot in the UK, although American sales were vastly down on past glories. The important factor as always is condition. So often this crackles with unwanted surface noise, and it does have many very quiet passages. But this one offers fantastic sound and my play-grade was only its second. Not only does this copy look like new, it sounds like it too and is beautifully pressed on pure vinyl. To date, one of the finest examples I have seen or heard.

Brief Info: The final Pink Floyd album to feature Roger Waters, and the considerable skills of keyboard player Richard Wright are absent. In fact it can be argued this is more like a Roger Waters solo album than a full band set as he is the only member credited with the song writing and performs most of the vocals. It received very mixed reviews on issue but still went to No. 1 on the UK album chart. Sales in the USA were far lower than anticipated. A somewhat downbeat concept album about war and a very personal album by Waters. An album I have come to treasure with several listens, but predictably, it divided fans. The production and audio quality is simply breathtaking, and this copy does it near maximum justice. With ancipitated sales being high, this was another mass-produced Pink Floyd album that often suffers variable sound quality. And with several quiet passages, a very clean pressed and hardly played copy becomes even more essential – this one more than qualifies – it was a delight to play-grade and appears hardly played, and cover-protected for most of its time. An album and copy for the audiophile collector, do not lose this one lightly.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with coated surfaces to give a lovely semi-shiny finish. The front has the band and title sticker (seen in close-up) Printed and made in England and includes the black inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Firstly the sticker: pristine. Never picked at or removed, this is little short of immaculate. The front retains lovely fresh sheen with any blemishes tiny, very few and faint. Impressively attractive and lacking the usual fine edge creases that blight most.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just the odd tiny edge hairline. Any rim impression trace gentle and faint, this revealing and uncomprising surface seldom seen much better. NOTE: No bar code.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as made.

Top Edges: Straight, flat and flush, any rub traces minuscule.

Bottom Edges: As above, and seldom seen as such on these more vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, all very sharp with barely a trace of thickening or wear. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick and straight with barely any compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This has not crushed with any tilt light, still quite upright and rigid, again this often seen flattened. A merest trace of a natural central ‘crease’ purely on opening that cannot really be avoided again this almost as light as possible, often these are pronounced with text damaging results. Here the text is close to perfect and unworn and even the hinges are unrubbed or worn with no scuffs or ink loss at all. These details the difference between average and exceptional.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and very light with better than excellent shape retained without knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very fine and highly attractive all-round example of this well-known 1980’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Cover-protection means this still comes very close to reminding of new. This highly attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): practically as made. A solid black polylined inner with only a little natural crinkle and no hard creases and barely aged. Fresh, no ring wear and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a grading I can seldom use on Pink Floyd albums that invariably were played many times. Played just twice after my mandatory sound check as I take nothing for granted. An album I know very well since buying a copy on issue and I know pressing quality can be an issue. This plays SUPERBLY!, with hardly anything nothing unwanted. An immaculate visual copy that is ultra clean with an amazing shine, freshness and being more solidly pressed than many I have held. Any surface traces are ultra fine, few and faint with scrutiny under bright light – I cannot imagine finding or hearing a much better example. Even from absolute brand new, few copies would not have the odd tiny hairline or blemish if you look closely enough, as factory-handled for packing was often less than subtle. Viewed in normal room light, this looks stunning. A record with complex, and some very fine grooves, hence delicate. Visually this will prove hard to match or find better and it should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful record – barely even run-in in vinyl terms – plays up to it’s high visual grading and even beyond with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical super-fidelity Pink Floyd album, that was never about to change and this pressing does it close to maximum justice. Hardely any traces of surface sound and overall an exceptional clean pressing just the way the audiophile listener and collector wants them. No pressing flaws or tracking issues*, few available copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Just two very careful plays for a popular record speaks volume. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
