Description

Pink Floyd : Ummagumma 1st Press (No EMI / 'Gand' and 'Londen'

This genuine first pressing is so getting so hard to find now in excellent to near mint condition but this one does not disappoint!  I go to a lot of record fairs and the gatefold is certainly the hardest to find in decent condition of all of Floyd's catalogue and this is definitely the best I have ever found.

The genuine first press can of course be recognised by having 'London' misspelled as 'Londen' on the back cover.  The vinyls have no EMI logos on the labels and 'The Grand Vizier's...' on the S4 label is misspelled as 'The Gand...'.  The first press matrix is always 1/2/1/2 also.  Note the single stamper 'M' on this particular version.

The two records are visually very impressive and play with superb clarity apart from a little interference at the start of S3.

SHDW 1/2 // A - 1 / B - 2 / A - 1 / B - 2 // GO 2 / AP 3 / M 1 / M 1

The audio on S1 is Near Mint (Mint- in many sections)

The audio on S2 is Ex (Track 2 Near Mint in many sections)

The audio on S3 is Near Mint (Mint- in many sections / Part 1 of T1 ranges between VG and Ex+)

The audio on S4 is Near Mint (Mint- for the majority)

The gatefold is Ex+

The inners are Ex

Two labels are Ex+ and the other two Mint-

Visual grading

Both vinyls are in great condition with only a small number of faint hairlines.  There are no marks other than a handful of tiny 'specks' and there are certainly no scratches.  The first record does have some spindle wear but not an excessive amount and the second has barely any spindle wear so has definitely not been played very much at all.  The run out grooves and labels are also in superb order.

Play grading

S1 of the 'live' album plays superbly with no clicks or pops.  'Astronomy Domine' has barely any static and what there is is so much in the background as to be inconsequential.  It is such a strong version and has no distortion.  The very quiet opening section on 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' is 'as new' the clarity is stunning and it continues to play with sublime quality as the volume builds.  The quiet end section also plays beautifully with no 'background' aside from one very faint tick right at the end.  'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' on S2 again has no clicks or pops but does have a little more static in the quieter sections.  'A Saucerful Of Secrets' plays with impressive clarity throughout and with only very minimal static.  A superb version for a genuine first pressing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro on 'Sysyphus' plays extremely well with barely any static.  The remainder of Part 1 is not perfect as there is the odd raspy type static sound and a handful of light static ticks also in the middle section.  The final section has excellent clarity with only a little static at the end.  Part 2 plays with superb precision, Part 3 is very 'clean' with only minimal 'background' and Part 4 is faultless.  'Grantchester Meadows' plays in stunning style for such quiet track and I cannot praise it highly enough!  The clarity here is so impressive and there is no intrusion on the audio, the 'birdsong' can be heard so clearly!  'Several Species...' ends S3 with immaculate audio again and no interference.  'The Narrow Way' again shows signs of hardly ever being on a turntable and plays with great clarity and definition.  There is just a hint of minor static on Part 2 and then the actual 'song' plays incredibly well with no interference.  'The Grand Vizier's Garden Party' ends this 'quirky' album with stunning clarity and no real 'background' apart from a little static right at the end.

In summary this first pressing plays with exemplary audio overall with the only obvious interference being on the first part of S2.  Otherwise the sonic quality on all the other 'tracks' is 'high end' with very little background.  The definition of the audio is so strong and there is no 'muddiness' to the sound whatsoever.  As stated this is also the most impressive genuine first press gatefold that I have seen in many a year and has hardly any shelf wear.

The Gatefold

Of all first pressings this is undoubtedly one of Floyd's hardest to find in good ex/nm condition and this is definitely the best I have seen in many a year.  They were not made in vast numbers and to find an original 'Londen' one as 'clean' as this is a rarity.  The top edges are 'as new' and whilst the bottom edge of the front cover does have some rubbing it still remains strong.  The bottom edge of the back cover has only a little rubbing in one area.  The wide spine has only minimal laminate wear and is still 100% legible and all the corners have only a very small amount wear, barely any!  The opening edges are also in great condition with very little handling wear.  For once the front cover is very clean with no laminate wear and the back cover is almost as good with only a couple of minor rubs by the top edge.  The inside is immaculate with no marking and overall I would say this rare cover deserves an Ex+ grading.

The Inners

The plain white die-cut inners have no side splits or marking just some minor creasing.  They could well be both originals but they are a different 'type'.  Both have 'Made In England' on but one has the Patent number on and the other says Patent Applied For.

The Labels

The yellow/green Harvest labels are in great condition with no marking or writing.  The 'live' album does have some spindle wear but the 'studio' album has hardly any.
