Pink Floyd : Ummagumma A-1 / B-2 / A-1 / B-2 1st Press
This genuine first press plays with superb audio and hardly any interference. Just two dull consecutive clicky sounds on 'Saucerful...' that about sums it up. Otherwise the clarity and depth of the audio is so impressive and the many quiet passages are stunning. A small number of minor background ticks that is all. As always I have listened to every track in full and a full grading is given below. The vinyls are visually stunning with no scratches and have not been overplayed.
This rare gatefold is not often seen as clean as this. It has only very minimal shelf wear and for once the wide spine is still very wide with no compression! The original Harvest inners are also in excellent condition although one of them is not poly-lined now.
This first press has an A1/B2/A1/B2 matrix and no EMI logo on the labels. Grand is misspelt as Gand on the S4 label and the cover has Londen on the back as opposed to London.
SHDW 1/2 // A-1 / B-2 / A-1 / B-2 // GO 2 / GT 1 / GO 1 / RL 1
The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T1 intro Ex+)
The audio on S2 is Ex+ (T2 Near Mint but one very brief VG- section)
The audio on S3 is Mint(-) (T1 Near Mint)
The audio on S4 is Mint(-)
The gatefold is Ex+
The labels are Ex+
The inner sleeves are Ex+ / Ex
Visual description The vinyls are in lovely condition and still have a very strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. I can only find a small number of faint hairline and there is nothing that stands out. There is no surface wear or groove wear and they have clearly not been overplayed. The first record does have a little more spindle wear but certainly not an excessive amount. the yellow / green Harvest labels have retained their original colour and have only very faint spotting that you can only see when you hold them at a certain angle.
Play grading
'Astronomy Domine' plays with superb audio and the only background is a minimal amount of light static on the intro. I will grade the intro as Ex+ and the remainder as Mint- the playback is stunning. No interference just a couple of very light ticks.
The quiet opening section on 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' plays with incredible clarity and no intrusion and then the high octane section could not be any more impressive. The low key final section again plays beautifully with no background. A stunning Mint version.
'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' on S2 plays with great quality throughout with only minimal background. It is of course so quiet for the majority and yet all I noticed were a small number of very light ticks, no clicks or pops. The 'louder' section plays with tremendous power and depth and the final quiet passage plays so clearly with only the bare minimum of light static here and there which is totally non-intrusive. There are three odd very brief 'squeaks' as the vocal comes back in but that is the only 'intrusion' across the entire track. I will say Ex+ but many sections are better than that.
The opening section on 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' is stunning with only a couple of minor ticks and then Mason's percussive piece has no background either. The beginning of the organ 'recital' does have a couple of dull click type sounds and then plays with superb audio for the remainder and especially during the 'vocal' section. This is Near Mint but with a brief VG- section.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wright's opus 'Sysyphus' plays with stunning quality and only a small number of minor static ticks. Part 3 does have some light static for 4/5 seconds but overall I think Near Mint is deserved.
The birdsong etc intro on 'Grantchester Meadows' is 'as new' and it continues in the same precise way. The clarity here is just amazing! An outstanding Mint version and so rarely found as good as this.
'Several Species...' also plays to the highest standard possible with no background of any kind. It is Mint you will not hear better!
'The Narrow Way (Part 1)' on S4 is faultless, the clarity is 'as new' and Part 2 has only a couple of light static ticks at the start. Part 3 has a two minor static 'moments' on the intro and then plays beautifully from then onwards. The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is second to none. Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio here.
'The Grand Vizier's Garden Party' completes this quirky album with crystal clear once again. The quiet sections play with incredible clarity and the louder percussive section towards the end is so strong and powerful. Perhaps not an 'easy' listen but you cannot deny the sonic quality on offer here. Mint-
In summary this genuine first press plays to a very high standard with barely any interference. The only intrusion really is during 'Saucerful...' on S2 but that lasts for only a couple of seconds. The clarity of sound is so impressive and as per usual with Floyd there are a number of quiet sections. The 'live' album plays so clearly and the studio album plays with outstanding sonic quality on both sides. Together with a super clean cover this will add to any collection.
The Gatefold & Lyric Inner
This rare cover (I think rare applies here) is in great condition with only very minimal shelf wear. The edges are perfect and the wide spine is super clean with only a couple of tiny marks. For once it is not compressed and retains its full original shape and structure. All corners are so clean with barely any wear and the opening edges have hardly any handling wear either. The laminated front cover has just one very minor crease lower right and a small number of the usual creases next to the spine and the back cover is just as impressive. The inside of the gatefold has only some light fading here and there along the top edge but is in superb condition overall. A fine example of this first press cover.
The original EMI inner sleeves are in excellent shape with no side splits or tears and have only minimal age related around the edges and light creasing. However, only one of them is poly-lined.
