Visual grading
The vinyls have been very well preserved and have no scratches, only a few very faint sleeve removal hairlines. They retain a lovely glossy sheen and it's not often you see a genuine first pressing looking as clean as these vinyl do. There is more spindle wear on the live album, not an excessive amount, and it is clear the studio album has been only lightly played. The labels are also super clean.
Play grading
'Astronomy Domine' plays with excellent audio and the only real interference is on the intro where there are 4/5 pops. The quiet mid section has only very light sporadic static and as I say the rest of the track is very impressive. There is no distortion which is relatively rare on a late 60s live album. From the word go 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' plays with exceptional clarity and there is barely any background. There is a solitary pop about one minute in but apart from that the vast majority of it plays as Near Mint the quality is that good. The ending in particular is stunning as it is so quiet and yet there is very little 'background'. 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' on S2 has very clear audio overall but there is some crackle in the background here and there plus a couple of pops about two minutes in. On the whole though for such a quiet track it plays well and there are no skips or jumps. 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' plays with less interference on the whole but there is a little crackle on the intro and on some of the quieter sections. I wouldn't class it as that intrusive and it definitely isn't loud. The end section plays with excellent power and very little 'background'.
'Sysyphus' on S3 plays very clearly but there is some background static/mild crackle throughout. As I often say it isn't intrusive and there are many sections that play with very little 'background' if any. The very quiet intro on 'Grantchester Meadows' plays with great clarity and very little interference on the intro. The remainder has only very light intermittent static in the background and for a first pressing the audio is excellent. There is nothing that classes as intrusive. 'Several Species...' ends the side with wonderful audio overall and barely any 'background'. 'The Narrow Way' on S4 has incredible clarity throughout, it really is a stunning version. There is very little static and the first half the 'sound effects' are so clear you forget you are listening to a first press. The actual song plays with astounding depth and warmth and the only obvious interference I heard was one faint click. The sublime quality of this track continues right to the end. 'The Grand Vizier's Garden Party' also plays exceptionally well with only a minimal amount of background static and I do mean minimal! I will err on the side of caution and grade it as Near Mint- which is surprising in a way as the majority of this track is just so quiet. It has obviously been rarely played. I wonder why! Only the end flute section has some light crackle in the background.
The Gatefold
The E.J. Day laminated gatefold is in excellent condition with minor shelf wear only. The edges are mega clean and have no rubbing and the corners only have a small amount of wear. The spine is 100% legible but does have a little wear at the top and bottom. The first opening edge has a little handling wear and the second hardly any. The laminate on both sides has no splits or lifting and there are a limited number of small creases. The inside of the gatefold is very clean with a couple of light marks only. As per some of the later first pressings 'London' is spelt correctly on the back of the cover.
Inner sleeves
The plain white die-cut inner sleeves have the Patent number of the left hand side and ''Made In Great Britain'' on the right. They each have one small side split and some creasing and age related marking.
The labels
As stated there is no small EMI logo on the labels and on S4 there is the misspelling ''The Gand...''. The yellow/green Harvest labels are very clean with no marking/writing and not a great deal of spindle wear.
