Label/Format: Harvest – with matt surfaces that have a gentle hint of texturing. This an early 1970s pressing just on the fringe of when the labels changed to include the EMI logo. As seen, side one has the original no EMI box label, the other three now include it. All four have the Grammophone Co Ltd text, this later changed to include EMI credits.

Label Conditions: All in supreme condition: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule and faint. This pair of records appear hardly played, both superbly pressed and offering fantastic clean audio throughout – alas, that is often not the case.

Rarity: Moderate: although this is early more experimental Pink Floyd, this sold well. Pressing quality is crucial for this set that has many very quiet passages, this one of the best I have heard, consistently fine with little unwanted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The fourth album in Pink Floyd’s famed catalogue, and probably most agree the most challenging musically. Side one, featuring just four tracks was recorded live at Mothers, Birmingham and Manchester College of Commerce in June 1969. Brilliantly inspired extended workouts of four classic songs from their first two albums. Haunting and ‘spacy’, this for me anyway, is Pink Floyd at their very best. Starting with Syd Barrett’s epic psych space rock classic ‘Astronomy Domine’, where a journey past the planets and their moons is joyfully observed (all though a cosmic haze, I would imagine) – Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania – Neptune, Titan, Stars can frighten – whoooooooooooo. This is followed by the blood curdling ‘Careful with that Axe, Eugene’. The eerie instrumental slowly builds until the massive cresendo of sound where Roger simply explodes into a frenzy of vocal mayhem before it slowly subsides again – this is simply mind-blowing. If anything, side two is even better with two of my personal favourite Floyd tracks. ‘Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun’ has one of the most haunting keyboard riffs ever and again this goes off into another space-rock climax that takes the listener into another dimension. The final live side track, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ blows-away the original studio version. Again stunning electronic sound with Wright’s organ and Gilmour’s manic slide juxataposing with Mason’s rhythmical drumming and Water’s frenzied percussion – who could forget him smashing the giant gong silhouetted against the eerie backdrop on the wonderful ‘Live at Pompeii’ film? The studio album is always the one that divides opinions. Again for me it’s brilliant, but it was a little too experimental for many. Wright’s ‘Sysypus’ starts with a deeply heavy atmospheric tune that would not be out of place in a Gothic horror movie, then he uses the deep notes of the piano plus echo with great effect. Then things get even stranger with wild and disjointed piano experimentalism before the Gothic riff returns for the end. Waters beautiful ‘Grantchester Meadows’ is an acoustic classic. Using bird and insect sounds as a backdrop for his vocal and guitar. The detail and stereo imagery is quite magnificent with a brilliant production by Smith. Listen to Water’s fingers bridging up and down the fret-boards of his guitar while the birdsong flitters from speaker to speaker, this could almost be in the room. The songs ends with an insect being swished at from a man who enters running down stairs, the conclusion is a massive SWAT that brings the start of the bizarre ‘Several Special of Small Furry Animals…’, a brilliant psychedelic mind-fest of weirdness ending with a Pict (an ancient Celtic Scot) speaking deeply accented, almost undecipheral words that end with ‘The Wind Cries Mary’ [see if you can hear the ‘Thank You’ at the very end]. Gilmour’s ‘Narrow Way’ is in comparison, fairly straightforward, starting acoustically with a more challenging middle section that would not be out-of-place on a Faust album, then back to more conventional electric guitar with vocals. Mason’s part is, as you would expect, percussion-based sounds, quite experimental and uncommercial, but captivating. Starting and ending with a haunting woodwind tune. The use of multi-tracking on the studio album was a triumph for engineer Peter Mew. As much as I like the later Floyd albums, these early titles, pre-DSOTM, were very special indeed. A massive double set that saw the mighty Pink Floyd leave the 1960s behind to enter the 1970s with more delights and super-stardom. These two records, pressed at the time of the label change, are in beautiful condition, hardly played with fantastic sound. Really clean pressings, even the quiet segments play impressively. So if audio quality is the main priority of being a very first issue, this copy delivers.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with laminate on the front and back. The inside is matt finished. Printed and made in Great Britain by Ernest J. Day. The two promotional inner sleeves are included, these were soon to be dropped for the plain white inners.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain fine shine and clarity, only light dulling around the rim seen under light – few will avoid this as a minimum. Most of any creasing on the spine edge, mostly light, but a couple nearer moderate on the front. Lifting has been avoided bar the odd tiny trace near the left edge, there is a small rub and crease on the front bottom right corner tip. Still attractive overall with only scant hint of age.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside as seen.

Top Edges: Straight, smooth, flat and unworn.

Bottom Edges: As above but with a small light dink to the front right tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with some compression. The centrefold has a raised type fold hinge, which means the outer spine will usually form a central recess and sinkage of the text, few will avoid this. Still readable and unworn, this surface even retains its laminate which often flakes off on formats like this. A little untidy being quite critical, but considerably better than many I have seen.

Corners: As stated, the only corner with a little wear and small dink is the front, bottom right. All others are fine with little wear and mostly retaining excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this famous cover, gentle clues to age but still a nice looking item. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): this not taking into account of the original owner very neatly putting the catalogue number, album title and band name on the top right of each inner. Very small and incredibly neat handwriting, often done by owners who really treasured their album collection. When this was issued, these Harvest promotional inner sleeves were fast coming to the end of their run, this pair in very impressive condition, this makes the earlier copies of this album more complete. Both gently aged with the usual seam edge adhesive browning that few avoid. Little else really to fault, with minimal creasing, both polylinings attached and no edge splits or repairs. .

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / (++): both records very clean with superb shine and quite heavily pressed. Actually quite unusual to see any album with a mix style of label format, but record one has exactly that as seen. Any surface traces are minimal and very faint indeed, finer than hairlines, this pair appear hardly been played. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers, this pair are very impressive indeed. If you want this album very well pressed and appearing hardly even run-in in vinyl terms, this is the copy for you – it should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early album plays up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, including those challenging quiet areas that are so often spoilt by constant crackle and clicks – this is an exceptional clean pressing without these issues and easy, effortless tracking*. Yes, the odd gentle reminder of what is being played, I deem ‘silence’ on this set a near impossibility, especially when being played on revealing equipment. This has areas of near silence in places, so the odd gentle tick or contact sound trace is almost inevitable, but few early, available copies will outperform these heavyweight pressings I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records have been played little – probably once or twice only and have been generally carefully and little handled. Very little, indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic early album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
