Rarity: Even with or without the EMI logo on the labels, this is not a particularly scarce album. It sold far better than its commercial potential. Condition is always a major factor: an album with some very quiet passages. So pressing quality and careful usage the prime factor, this still early example has few issues and was a joy to play-grade.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The fourth album in Pink Floyd’s famed catalogue, and probably most would agree the most challenging musically. Side one, featuring just four tracks was recorded live at Mothers, Birmingham and Manchester College of Commerce in June 1969. Brilliantly inspired extended workouts of four classic songs from their first two albums. Haunting and ‘spacy’, this for me anyway, is Pink Floyd at their very best. Starting with Syd Barrett’s epic psych space rock classic ‘Astronomy Domine’, where a journey past the planets and their moons is joyfully observed (all though a cosmic haze, I would imagine) – Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania – Neptune, Titan, Stars can frighten – whoooooooooooo. This is followed by the blood curdling ‘Careful with that Axe, Eugene’ where if Waters’ blistering scream does not send a shiver down the spine, there is something wrong with either your system or hearing. The eerie instrumental slowly builds until the massive cresendo of sound where Roger simply explodes into a frenzy of vocal mayhem before it slowly subsides again – this is simply mind-blowing. If anything, side two is even better, with two of my personal favourite Floyd numbers. ‘Set the Controls…’ has one of the most haunting keyboard riffs ever and again this goes off into another space-rock climax that takes the listener into another dimension. The final live side track, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ quite honestly blows-away the original studio version. Again stunning electronic sound with Wright’s organ and Gilmour’s manic slide juxataposing with Mason’s rhythmical pulsating drumming and Water’s frenzied percussion – who could forget him smashing the giant gong silhouetted against the eerie backdrop on the wonderful ‘Live at Pompeii’ film? The studio album is always the one that gets the mixed opinions. Again for me it’s brilliant, but it was a little too experimental for many. Wright’s ‘Sysypus’ starts with a deeply heavy atmospheric tune that would not be out of place in a Gothic horror film, then he uses the deep notes of the piano plus echo with great effect. Then things get even stranger with wild and disjointed piano experimentalism before the Gothic riff returns for the end – a fantastic captivating piece. Waters beautiful ‘Grantchester Meadows’ is an acoustic classic. Using bird and insect sounds as a backdrop for his vocal and guitar. The detail and stereo imagery is magnificent with a brilliant production by Smith. Listen to Water’s fingers bridging up and down the fret-boards of his guitar while the birdsong flitters from speaker to speaker. The songs ends with an insect being swished at from a man who enters running down stairs, the conclusion is a massive SWAT that brings the start of the infamous ‘Several Special of Small Furry Animals…’, a brilliant psychedelic mind-fest of weirdness ending with a Pict (an ancient Celtic Scot) speaking deeply accented, almost undecipheral words that end with ‘The Wind Cries Mary’ [see if you can hear the ‘Thank You’ at the very end]. Gilmour’s ‘Narrow Way’ is in comparison, fairly straightforward, starting acoustically with a more challenging middle section that would not be out-of-place on a Faust album, then back to more conventional electric guitar with vocals. Mason’s part is, as you might expect percussion-based sounds, quite experimental and uncommercial but totally captivating and compelling. Starting and ending with a haunting woodwind tune. The use of multi-tracking on the studio album was a triumph for engineer Peter Mew. As much as I like the later Floyd albums, these early titles, pre-DSOTM, were very special indeed. A massive double set that saw the mighty Pink Floyd leave the 1960s behind to enter the 1970s with even more astonishing delights and super-stardom. This a fine copy that for most plays very well indeed, but ‘silence’ is near impossible on a very difficult and challenging piece for vinyl with numerous quiet passages and often variable pressing quality. This slightly later pressing is very well pressed with any unwanted sounds, few, gentle and light – the odd polite reminder of what is being played beyond difficult to avoid.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A gatefold format with laminate on the front and back. The inside is matt finished. Printed and made in Great Britain by Ernest J. Day. This set includes the early Harvest promotional inner sleeves as seen.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain excellent shine, freshness and clarity with very little lifting. Minimal traces of dulling, even under light, but as the case with most gatefolds, a little rim impression present and very difficult to avoid. Most of any creases fine and light, with just one moderate one on the back near the top left corner area. Overall, these outer faces give scant clues to considerable age and remain attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside with any traces of set-off (where black rests upon pale when closed) little and light, mainly near the top right.

Top Edges: Generally straight and practically unworn with full laminate cover, slight ‘curl’ to the ends being critical. One tiny surface chip being very critical.

Bottom Edges: As above, even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light as seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these edges that are untrimmed, the fine exposed strips on the laminate ends quite wide.

Spine and Text: Very impressive: solid, straight and thick, avoiding compression and wear. The laminate fully intact and all text unworn, this very well centred also. Folded squarely so the edges meet up nigh-on flush and parallel.

Corners: Minimal hint of tip rubbing, a small one on the back top left, little else. Mostly excellent shape retained without bashes and very little hint of dinking.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this classic cover. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT: one has a corner crease. These are the original Harvest promotional inners, both retain their polylinings with no edge splits or repairs. Gently aged only with mild toning of the seam adhesive areas, that rarely avoided at best. Nice examples that make this set really complete.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better still. Both very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed. Complex groove patterns, some very compact indicating quiet sound, this a complex and challenging record and recording. Any surface marks few and faint as seen more critically under bright light, there are hardly any stylus blemishes on these impressive surfaces, these records appear hardly played. This album is never easy to find this clean and clearly little used, visually a pair to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play mostly above their fine visual gradings with little to fault. In fact this is one of the better pressings I have heard with many often crackly and even with pressing noises which this one has avoided. The live album is superb and still remains one of my favourite Floyd albums, the production is obviously not as polished as the studio album, but both sound just right for what they are. Given to what these vintage records could have been subjected too, these have more than survived. Just enough to remind you are listening to a vintage record and not a squeaky clean digital format that I personally have few objections too. Silence for this difficult set is near impossible and overall this pair play very well with just polite reminder – there are no tracking issues*. Challenging music – a great album from the classic period – Pink Floyd at their most experimental and best. This pair will prove difficult to find significantly better, this slightly later copy of ‘Ummagumma’ should please many collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
