As one of Britain's most influential groups, Pink Floyd transformed stadium rock with their run of 70s concept albums and their eighth outing remains among the most personal. The record is defined by contrasts: the sweep of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' set against the jagged satire of 'Have a Cigar', the mechanised paranoia of 'Welcome to the Machine' against the stripped-down poignancy of the title track. This reissue reveals new sides to the story, with rare demos showing Roger Waters' early vision for 'The Machine Song' and David Gilmour's pedal steel lines brought to the fore in alternate mixes. Uniting these fragments with the completed studio master presents a fascinating portrait of a band at once fractured and utterly in command of their powers.
