A Special Note About This Album & Copy: Of all the classic titles I offer and get asked about few get close to ‘Wish You Were Here’. I get regular Emails asking me if I have a ‘perfect’ playing copy from frustrated vinyl collectors who simply cannot find a clean playing copy of this most wanted title. Several in fact telling me they are stockpiling very noisy copies (albeit clean looking) awaiting one that does this supreme album justice. Well it’s a very tough ask and they are truly very difficult to find as most have often considerable surface sound, crackle, pops and clicks and sometimes even pressing sounds and distortion. Even from new, the UK copies were to say the least ‘variable’. It is very clear to me where the problem lies. Few things in life are guaranteed, but the anticipation for the follow-up to the massive selling ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ was immense, this WAS a guaranteed huge seller. Hence this album was ‘mass produced’ quickly to meet demand and pressing quality suffered (not the production however which was again stunning). This record has incredible genuine high fidelity sound values but appears let down by pressing quality. The title is common enough to find but only a small percentage will ever play well enough to satisfy the audiophile listener. The higher-end systems ruthlessly reveal flaws and unwanted sounds and I rarely find copies suitable for offering (and it’s not for the want of trying). If they don’t please me, they are not good enough for others – that simple. This copy looks hardly played, unusual in-itself. and it is an early issue with the A-1 / B-5 matrixes. These I have found the hardest to find that play well and this one is not silent, but any surface sounds are mostly light and mostly infrequent and certainly tolerable (for me anyway), even played on my revealing system (listed further down). Just eight very gentle ticks at the very beginning as the faint organ intro starts from what is a certain pressing scuff, but little else throughout. I almost expect some light surface sound at the very least but little worried me too much on this far better than average copy and the album remains hugely enjoyable after the first few seconds (that has only sparse sound anyway). If silence is non-negotiable, well two options: either listen to the CD version that will offer just that, or wait for the near impossible from the vinyl, and they are almost close to that. This copy includes the original serrated post-card, later ones were smooth edged and the wide opening card inner (which never treated the record surfaces well). Lastly, the original owner had the good sense to retain the large cover sticker that was applied to the black shrinkwrapping. Most-all disgarded this wrapping to see the real cover along with the sticker – the sticker I consider an important part of the set – the shrinkwrap only for the completist as the cover is then obscured (of course). So, a near complete early pressed copy that plays superbly with the very brief blemish as the very beginning. If that is an issue… .

Label Conditions: Both very clean indeed and only with very close scrutiny under light do one or two ultra light and very faint spindle traces become apparent (just). Considering the massive popularity of this album, this early issue looks hardly even played.

Rarity: It would be foolish say this album is even scarce, but only a small percentage are found that offer clean enough sound for me to offer and the large round sticker from the initial shrinkwrap is never easy to find.

Brief Info: Most rock fans will know this album well. Consistently high in all all-time great lists whether compiled by critics or the record-buying public, this album sold in vast numbers but fewer remain in fine overall conditions or play well and have all the original pieces (excluding the black shink). It’s success and huge demand is, I feel sure, why this album has so many inherent problems. Pressed in vast numbers and most-all on thin vinyl (even the very first-made), quality-control was probably not high on the agenda, units in shops was the order-of-the-day, hence so many copies failed to impress for clean sound. Floyd’s homage to original guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, this has always been one of the band’s most popular albums and justifiably so. I will never even consider offering this classic set unless it plays well enough to do so and only a small percentage ever do. Many fans will still tolerate less than quiet pressings of this record to enjoy the true drama and impact of this beautifully produced album. Vinyl still offers the widest dynamic range and impact and my LP12 made this record sound quite stunning. After those initial light ticks from the small edge mark, there is little else to fault – total silence is hardly feasible on such a record that does have very quiet passages, but this has little to fault. The odd sporadic crackle trace or click is nigh-on impossible to avoid. Remember, my LP12 is ruthlessly revealing – the music being so good, any minor blemishes washed over me totally. The saxophone break on ‘Diamond’ still sends a shiver down the spine as does the effects on ‘Machine’. The hard card inner sleeve is very unfriendly to fine grooved record surfaces but apart from a fine hairline on side one and the odd ultra minor surface scuff (being critical) there is little else to fault other than the aforementioned pressing mark at the very beginning. A super clean example included with an equally clean cover and inner. The original serrated postcard is included also in very fine condition. Overall, a fine looker and offering audio quality almost as fine as it will ever get. A copy from that quality, barely played collection recently purchased.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a single matt finished cover with no laminate and smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England. Rarely seen one better, the hugely discerning collector kept this inside a protective cover from new.

Cover Front: Very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Just about all you see offered are grubby, this HAS to be cover-protected and little handled to have any chance of surviving like this. Any traces of grubbiness or set-off is minuscule and any marks the same. No creasing and those lovely nipped ends in manufacture still have those prized ‘flats’ seen from the front (please see my close-up spine-end detail).

Cover Back: As per the front with no ringwear or press marks either side.

Top Edge: Practically as made and dead straight with no grubbiness.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Very slight burr traces near the very centre. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: solid, dead straight, uncompressed and square. Still pure white with no grubbiness or abrasions, those lovely pinched ends ultra neat and unbent or dinked. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: All retain near mint shape and have no dinks or creasing worthy of mention. Seldom seen any of these edges and corners better than this. I tip-my-hat to the one-and-only from-new owner.

Cover Summary: A truly exceptional all-round example of this very unforgiving mid-70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner & Format: MINT: an unlined thick card inner and again never good for the record’s surface. Most discerning collectors immediately transferred the record to a lined inner to avoid abrasions to the playing surfaces (and protecting the inner itself too). Often too late however, as many had marked in manufacture as the LP was rammed inside the inner in the packing factory. This is simply as made and has the shaped corners and the original wide top opening. Ultra clean, fresh with barely a blemish to be seen. Uncreased with all edges unsplit (or repaired).

The Post Card: MINT(-): this is the rarer serrated edged type, many are smooth cut and are more common. The ‘perforations’ are all very neat indeed and have avoided the burring and damage many are seen with. Just a little minor tip chipping on the ones on the bottom right (the last four, ranging from microscopic to tiny). The front has a superb glossy finish that is pristine with not even a hairline mark or scratch (even viewed critically under bright light). Hold this up to a light-lit window and the water actually shimmers and glistens like the real thing. The back is very white and looking as made, there are NO creases, even to the performation tips. This is almost like a vintage postage stamp in Near Mint condition.

The Shrinkwrap Sticker: EXCELLENT(++): purely because a trace of the graphic may be clipped. A slightly strange thing to grade, but for completists, this sticker is important. This has been cut off the shink, not a perfect circle by any means but 99.99 per cent of the graphic and interesting areas are present. The backing is mostly covered with the black shinkwrap and there is barely any creasing or crinkle and looks practically as made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / MINT(-): a small light pressing mark near the very edge of side one along with one long hairline (no sound), any other marks tiny, few and very faint. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavier pressed than most all others I have held. A copy hardly even played, and so very typical from this small barch recently purchased. Rarely have I seen cleaner or less-marked playing surfaces on this album. I remember almost holding my breath all those years ago when removing my own copy from that harsh, hard inner. Often you could hear grit and debris grinding into the surfaces as they were removed for the first time, hardly any wonder so many are seen with many fine visual marks and hairlines (or worse), especially on those still found inside the harsh inner. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I reitterate, I have heard so many bad copies of this record (that I will never contemplate offering), this is not silent for all but it still does this album high justice. This is never an easy album which I still think is because of the mass production of this record. So often it has considerable crackle, often present on the majority of the record. An album with several quite and lengthy passages, this becomes really critical – and somewhat irritating. If indeed anyone has a copy that plays perfectly for its entirety, well treasure it because it’s the exceptional rather than the rule. This impressive early issue plays largely to it’s visual grading and it will beat most I feel sure. Beautifully produced with breathtaking sound and dynamics and plays with powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this is genuine high fidelity masterpiece. Such a pity the pressing quality did not alway match it. I am asked so often by regular buyers if I have a ‘perfect’ ‘Wish You Were Here’, but only very rarely can I offer a copy near that standard. Vinyl is seldom absolutely silent that on this title, it’s a near impossibility on a ‘standard’ issue. If silence is demanded, stick to the CD version or wait for the near impossible, this one does give a very good account of itself. I remind also, this was play graded at volume on my LP12 turntable, one of the most revealing and uncompromising units ever made for high-end vinyl reproduction and it reveals the blemishes as well as the astonishing sound that almost takes you into the recording studio itself. The stereo imagery of ‘Welcome to the Machine’ and the power of the bass synth has amazing depth, slam and resolution. A real test for any equipment and pressing. Few unwanted sounds after those initial very gentle brief few ticks at the very beginning of side one and it will take an extraordinary example to better this significantly. This is a great album musically and deserves it’s masterpiece status that remains undimished over the years. I never expect ‘silence’ of this title, but I only tolerate low-level and modestly infrequent sound blemishing, and this was well within my own personal tolerance. The Sondek gleans every available piece of information that the latest CD remasters fail to produce and for dynamics and range, nothing comes even close. There is something really special in owning a very clean copy of ‘Wish You Were Here’ as an early issue. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
