Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, few and faint. Another from the one-owner-from-new collection and again, appearing hardly played, and if so, with due care. The main sleeve cover protected, the record stored in a replacement soft-lined inner, he even kept the large cover sticker that was discarded by most. This one has no writing or stickers.

Rarity: A standard issue of ‘Wish You Were Here’ is a common record, let’s not pretend otherwise – it proved to be one of Pink Floyd’s most popular ever albums with guaranteed sales after the colossal success of ‘Dark Side of the Moon – both albums sold in massive numbers. One of the most eagerly awaited albums within the prog-rock genre, the most crucial factor is condition and pressing quality. This one without doubt has hardly been played and is pressed to a very high standard. No copy will ever match the Nimbus Supercut pressing, but this standard first issue gives a great account of itself, lacking the common pressing flaws, noises and unwanted contact sounds. It proved a delight to play-grade with any blemishes very few and light.

Album Info: Few rock fans will not know this album well. Consistently high in all all-time great lists whether compiled by critics or the record-buying public, this album sold in vast numbers but fewer remain in fine overall conditions or play well and have all the original pieces. Pink Floyd’s homage to original guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, this has always been one of the band’s most popular albums and justifiably so. Many fans will still tolerate less than quiet pressings of this record to enjoy the true drama and impact of this beautifully produced album. Vinyl still has the edge in terms of dynamic range and impact and my LP12 made this record sound truly stunning. The general lack of unwanted sound on this copy make this a pleasure to play-grade. As already mentioned, I play all my records on a Linn LP12 front end, it is ruthlessly revealing, but this revealed little but clear and clean sound with ultimate dynamic range and detail. The saxophone break on ‘Diamond’ still sends a shiver down the spine as does the effects on ‘Machine’. The original owner discarded the black wrapping, as did most buyers – myself very much included when I bought a copy on the day of issue. I did not even consider keeping it on, I wanted to see the real cover not something that resembled a dustbin liner. It’s success and huge demand is, I feel sure, why this record has so many problems. Pressed in vast numbers and quickly, and most-all on thin vinyl (even the first-made), quality-control was probably not high on the agenda, units in shops was the order-of-the-day, hence so many copies fail to impress for clean sound. So audio quality was and still is a lottery, but this one plays very well indeed, the odd sporadic light tick near impossible to avoid, especially as this has so many quiet passages – the lengthy intro and outro especially will be known to all. Overall, I consider this a near exceptional example, lacking only the black shrink wrap – the large sticker however, was retained (and is far more interesting).

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces, printed and made in England, uncredited. This has the pinched spine ends. Includes the angle-cut card graphic/lyric inner sleeve and the correct glossy serrated post card. Also the huge round original front sticker was retained by the one original owner, the sticker retains the very sticky black backing proving its original.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides little short of immaculate as-made. Very clean, fresh with no darkening or toning, and barely a crease to be seen. One to hold and cherish, this has barely aged at all and retains an unusual freshness and lacking the usual grubbiness most have these days. A very faint spot on the back almost certainly there from new and almost nit-picking to even mention it. Cover-protected from new, and there lies the difference, probably the best original cover I have seen since the one I bought way back in 75.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both perfect. Straight with no wear of discolouration, these are rarely seen like this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Virtually pristine, very clean, equally sharp with any trace of thickening minuscule, even viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Again, very close to as-made. Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn, also very well centred on the narrow depth. The surface again very white and fresh, lacking the usual discolouration most acquire over time.

Corners: Barely any hint of wear with no dinks or knocks. All retain near perfect shape, any hint of tip creasing minuscule.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this deceptively delicate cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors, indeed this could prove a near ultimate upgrade for some.

The Sticker: EXCELLENT(+): originally stuck to the black plastic wrapping, this still has the very sticky backing. It will be applied to my brand new plastic cover protector, it easily removes from this surface. A very large sticker with little to fault, these naturally go a little transparent over time. The original owner carefully removed this, so it has minimal rim creasing, just a trace at the 12 o’clock position as it had to get a ‘start’ to ve removed of course. It has little else to fault, and with so many of these discarded, this is a more crucial part of the original album.

The Inner Sleeve & Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined card inner, never good news for the record’s surface. Most discerning collectors immediately transferred the record to a lined inner to avoid abrasions to the playing surfaces, and this was done by the original owner. Hence the superb condition of both disc and inner sleeve. This has the correct angle shapes to three corners, the other square cut. This is also clean and fresh with just the odd tiny tone spot, but minimal hint of discolouration and no creasing – all edges intact with no repairs, the bottom one has a tiny thin near the centre on very close inspection. They are seldom seen much better than this.

The Post Card: EXCELLENT: or close to. This has the original glossy front surface and has the serrated edges. Later ones were matt and some with straight cut sides. Overall, this is clean and fresh, even the matt back text side has little to fault as-seen. There are a couple of quite fine creases near the top right corner on the front, any chipping tiny and very little on the odd serrated point near the bottom right corner. This post card again, often missing, but clearly, an integral part of the album.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly played, and typical from this lot with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. So many of these played heavily and that hard inner never surface-friendly, so quite rare to find a copy with few visual blemishes. The original owner’s decision to wisely put the record in a replacement Decca soft inner paid considerable dividends. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This evergreen classic prog album plays up to, and mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Like most of this type, the odd sporadic gentle tick is almost the very least to be expected, even more so on an album with some quite lengthy quiet passages. All fans will know the music on this album and how challenging it is to find clean copies and sound. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been superbly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Compared to many I have heard, this, like the cover, could prove a significant upgrade for some.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
