Rarity: It would be foolish say this album is even scarce, but only a small percentage are found with any of the original black wrapping still attached. This makes a considerable difference for the more serious collector, even though the black shrinkwrap is not fully present or intact, allowance has to be made for shinkage which this always does. Over time, this contracts and tightens on the cover substantially making removal near impossible. Also finding the sticker practically as made is a considerable bonus. This one had the sticker applied inverted from the opening edge, that I have found more unusual. Also, this record appears hardly even played and is very well pressed in terms of lack of surface noise.

Brief Info: Few rock fans will not know this album well. Consistently high in all all-time great lists whether compiled by critics or the record-buying public, this album sold in vast numbers but fewer remain in fine overall conditions or play well and have all the original pieces. It’s success and huge demand is, I feel sure, why this record has so many problems. Pressed in vast numbers and most-all on thin vinyl, quality-control was probably not high on the agenda, units in shops was the order-of-the-day, hence so many copies failed to impress for clean sound. This record offers little in the way of surface sound but does have a few light ticks on side two from an ultra fine hairline that is barely even visible. The record appears very little played and for it’s majority, offers fantastic sound. Side one indeed plays beautifully with hardly anything unwanted at all, that too with that long and quiet build up to the ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’. Those who want silence will never find it easy from vinyl, that is a plain fact.

Pink Floyd’s homage to original guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, this has always been one of the band’s most popular albums and justifiably so. Many fans will still tolerate less than quiet pressings of this record to enjoy the true drama and impact of this beautifully produced album. Vinyl still has the edge in terms of dynamic range and impact and my LP12 made this record sound quite stunning – but it does have a few, mostly very light ticks on side two, not very many or I would not offer it. Most of the album plays superbly and those fine marks are so often a trait of that very hard card inner sleeve – also a fact. I clearly remember buying a copy on issue day and actually held my breath removing the record from the inner. It was almost stuck inside with static then you could actually hear the crackle, feel the resistance and surface debris pressing agains the surface when pulled out – I guess all were the same? I play all my records on an Linn LP12 front end, it is ruthlessly revealing and this copy plays without the usual crackle, any traces minimal and faint. The saxophone break on ‘Diamond’ still sends a shiver down the spine as does the effects on ‘Machine’. The original packaging is largely complete, that allowing for shrinkage of the black plastic on the cover. Most-all buyers removed it all anyway - myself very much included when I bought the aforementioned copy. I did not even consider keeping it on, I wanted to see the real cover not something that resembled a dustbin liner. But time changes opinions, and many want the original packaging too, but few still exist with it included, hence the vast gain in price guide values for those that do. This black shinkwrap always contracts, so this in real terms has lost little and even has avoided splits other than the opening. So the cover potentially is near immaculate, the exposed right edge little darkened or worn. The shaped and recessed, wide opening inner sleeve is included in very fine shape as is the original post card. This with solid edges without the stamp-like perforations. So a very strong overall copy and without doubt hardly played. But a small few mostly light ticks on side two means not for the perfectionist. For me, these brief blemishes are better than constant irritating crackle of which this has avoided. So think and decide, if anyone owns a copy of this that does actually play perfectly, well treasure it, because few ever will.

Cover Grade and Format: I cannot really grade what I cannot see in full. The exposed area on the right due to shrinkage is high Excellent with minimal discolouration or grubbiness, I would assume the rest below the wrap is immaculate as it has not been exposed. A single matt finished cover with no laminate. Printed and made in England.

Original Shrinkwrap, Cover & Sticker: The sticker is little short of as made and looks very impressive as seen on my close-up picture. The black shrinkwrap is amongst the very best I have ever seen with most of it still attached. This retains a superb shine and freshness and all but the right opening area is fully intact with no splits or damage. Even the edges are unsplit and only the white seen on my pictures are the only exposed parts of this cover that has to be almost as made underneath. Finding an opened shinkwrap on this cover better will prove very difficult indeed and this indeed could be a substantial upgrade for any collector in it’s own right.

The Inner Sleeve & Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being quite critical. An unlined thick card inner with matt surfaces, and again never good for the record’s surface. Most discerning collectors immediately transferred the record to a lined inner to avoid abrasions to the playing surfaces. Often too late however, as many had marked in manufacture as the LP was rammed inside the inner in the packing factory. This has aged little and still clean with any surface marks or blemishes few and faint as seen critically under angled light. Undamaged or split with no repairs. Barely even a hint of any record impression as the owner put the record inside a replacement inner. This has the rounded corners and the original wide top opening, this crisp and very neat indeed with barely anything to fault. Later ones had a much narrower recess and appear different.

The Post Card: PRACTICALLY MINT: this one has the smooth edges and has a matt finish. It looks as made, little else to really add.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with only ultra fine and faint surface traces seen critically under bright angled light. The very few brief ticks on side two from a hairline so incredibly fine I actually found it very difficult to locate. I had to follow the label around on rotation to pin-point the fine culprit. What is lacking on this slightly later pressing are the dull impurities seen in the vinyl. I am sure many first issues were pressed on recycled vinyl, thus so many crackle and pop. The vinyl looks more ‘virgin’ like and the pressing quality is way better than average. As stated, this record was mass-produced in considerable numbers to meet initial demand. The purity of the vinyl was without doubt questionable and that is the main reason why so many of these (and other big-sellers around this time) were not as quiet as they could have been. I would simply say this one appears and sounds much cleaner and purer than many I have seen. The lack of speckle or dulling within the vinyl itself is always good news on any record, and this one in particular. Visually a lovely record that without any doubt, has hardly been played, but with the few brief ticks on side two, not quite for the audiophile purist or highly discerning – but finding a better one will never prove easy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I reitterate, I have heard so many really bad copies of this record (that I will not offer), this one a very clean pressing but a few ticks on side two, given to how difficult this is to ever find near ‘perfect’, I have no hesitation on offering it. Side one plays superbly with barely anything unwanted and side two still impressive with the odd light blemish. One of the most difficult, if not indeed THE most difficult album in the Floyd catalogue that will play well on vinyl (except for the mono version of ‘Piper’), this so often has considerable and loud crackle, often present on the majority of the record. Here any surface sound is minimal, very light and equally very infrequent. An album with several quite passages and silence on any copy is a considerable demand. If indeed anyone has a copy that plays absolutely perfectly for it’s entirety, well treasure it because it’s the exceptional rather than the rule. A beautifully produced album with breathtaking sound and dynamics and plays with powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this is genuine high fidelity masterpiece. Such a pity the pressing quality did not alway match it. I am asked so often by regular buyers if I have a ‘perfect’ ‘Wish You Were Here’, but only very rarely can I offer a copy that even approaches that standard. An evergreen high fidelity favourite along with ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, and still used to this day to test quality systems. The astonishing sound that almost takes you into the recording studio itself with the stereo imagery of ‘Welcome to the Machine’ and the power of the bass synth offering amazing depth, slam and resolution. A real test for any equipment and pressing. A great album musically and deserves it’s masterpiece status that remains undimished over the years. The vast majority I found very pleasing and little really worried me too much, I almost expect some minor sound issue from this album. The Sondek gleans every available piece of information that even the lauded CD remasters fail to produce. There is something really special in owning an early issue ‘Wish You Were Here’, even if the sound if less squeaky clean than the digital format. A very respectable complete example that many will enjoy, but not for the less tolerant who only want perfection at any cost. Overall, a copy that merits high recommendation if perfection is not demanded – I rest my case.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
