Description
Original 1967 LP by the Pleasure Fair on the UNI label. Thanks in part to the Japanese market, these once overlooked little albums of lush soft pop have suddenly gone from dollar bins at record fairs to in-demand items. Sure, the garage psych purist in you won’t find much here to get excited about. There are no wicked fuzz licks, backwards guitars or even really fast tempos. This is music that sneaks up on you, wraps your ears in velvet-lined harmonies and crystal clear production, and send you flying off on clouds of glistening harp glissandos and lush orchestration. Anyone into the caramel-sweet soft pop concoctions of the Cowsills, Sagittarius or the Love Generation will know exactly what to expect from the Pleasure Fair – “Stay Around For the Good Times” and “Put It Out of Your Mind” being the best of the lot, little shiny glimpses into soft pop heaven. Me, I prefer it when they get a little dark – and by “dark”, I don’t mean a ripping fuzz lick or lyrics about headless bunnies. All it takes for these clean-cut boys and girls to get a little “dark” is a few unexpected minor keys, or a sudden feeling of sullen melancholy a la the Left Banke. “Fade In Fade Out” offers the former, a great juxtaposition of gentle dreamworld verses against a chorus that rocks out (for them, anyway) with some well-placed and oh-so-subtly-psychedelic minor keys. “Turnaway” offers the latter, a sumptuous slice of moody baroque pop with harpsichord and intricate harmonies – basically the Left Banke with a blond chick. Produced by David Gates, who would later go on to form speed metal pioneers BREAD, so this one delivers all the soft pop and sunshine pop goodies you’d expect, with a few pleasant surprises. Pleasure Fair is actually Pleasure Good. Original STEREO pressing from 1967 on the UNI label. Vinyl plays VG+ to VG++, more surface noise at the beginning of each side then getting better, but well kept all the way through. Cover’s been played with on the front (see pic), with a big white sticker, several felt marker lines and medium ringwear. All seams intact and the back cover looks good, but due to the front I’d grade the cover GOOD at best.
