Originally released in 1985, now celebrating its 40th anniversary with this expansive reissue, Rum, Sodomy & The Lash would serve as the second full-length from Irish folk-punk troubadours The Pogues. Produced by the legendary Elvis Costello, who was first brought in to man the desks for a handful of singles before being entrusted with sonically visualising the album's raw, live-in-a-room nature, his poignant ethos was - "I saw my task was to capture them in their dilapidated glory before some more professional producer fucked them up." Meeting their need "to be not so much as produced as facilitated", as put by guitarist Philip Chevron, the resulting collection cemented both the band's legacy in the realms of folk and alternative music, as well as becoming one of the most critically revered records of the 80s. Featuring classic tracks such as 'The Old Main Drag', 'A Pair Of Brown Eyes', 'Sally MacLennane', and their much lauded version of 'Dirty Old Town', this anniversary edition comes with a bonus disc comprised of the legendary Poguetry In Motion EP (featuring 'Rainy Night In Soho'), as well as the original single B-sides, cuts from their July 1985 BBC Janice Long session and performance at the Glasgow Barrowlands in 1987, plus a rough mix of Poguetry In Motion outtake, 'Do You Believe In Magic?', originally by The Lovin' Spoonfuls.
