POISON IDEA

Hardcore heavyweights who spent many years in the 1980s and '90s pursuing a path of harsh, speedy rock. 

Nihilistic Portland, Oregon hardcore outfit Poison Idea was formed in 1980 by frontman 

Jerry A., guitarist Tom Roberts, bassist Chris Tense, and drummer Dean Johnson. 

The group debuted three years later with the EP Pick Your King, cramming 13 songs 

into a 16-minute time frame; the Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes EP followed 

in 1985, fine-tuning the band's blistering sound and fatalistic worldview. Thanks to their

 notoriously insatiable diet of drugs, alcohol, and junk food, the members of Poison Idea 

all ballooned past the 300-pound mark by the time of their 1986 full-length Kings of Punk, 

with Roberts, who then tipped the scales at an impressive 450 pounds, rechristening 

himself Pig Champion in honor of the occasion. Tense and Johnson were then 

dismissed from the lineup, although the former returned in time for 1987's War All the Time, 

recorded with second guitarist Eric "Vegetable" Olsen and drummer Steve "Thee Slayer Hippy" Hanford...

Portland, Oregon's Poison Idea were never a subtle act. In fact, they resided at the furthest end of the opposite spectrum, fusing the pummeling rhythm section of heavy metal, with the crunching three-chord speed and fury of American hardcore, topped off with Jerry A.'s snarling, larger than life baritone, spitting out declamation after declamation against the world. Feel the Darkness is, simply stated, Poison Idea's most blistering moment in the sun, a steamrolling mass of furious speed and aggression, tempered with excellent drum and guitar work. Poison Idea, while helping to establish the template for American hardcore, were a talented bunch, and resided more often than not as much in metal as in punk. Though its predecessor, Record Collector's Are Pretentious Assholes modestly proved the growing talents of this band, Feel the Darkness established that as concrete fact. Songs like "Gone For Good", and "Just to Get Away" barrel forth like runaway locomotives, while the title track resonates with hair-raising depth, and slow-fused power...(AllMusic)
