Description

'Pop In Pop'
(Disc Waldberg/C. Brull, c. early 1970s) UK Library album (Disc Waldberg DM101; distributed in the UK, and with added stickering, by C. Brull). Date of issue not stated but must be early 1970s (in fact c.1971 judging by the inclusion of a track which rips off the style of George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord'). Sleeve and record in VG to VG+ condition (playback is generally reasonably clean but has noticeable crackles and 'pops' on some tracks - more evident on quieter sections).

Track listing:

(side one)

1. POP LAND STATION
Crisp uptempo '60s soul style beat and a groovy bassline. Cheeky harmonica, horns, wah wah. Excellent, bouncy track.

2. BACH IS POP
A touch of Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' mixed with the Beatles on this slow, Hammond driven rocker.

3. CHYPRE-POP
Funky beat/bass with wah wah and horns..quite tough-sounding. Alternates with a flutey psychedelic section in 11/8 time!

4. HAPPY SUN
Completely cheesy sub-Eurovision style with inane 'la-la-la' reverbed female vocals.

5. EDEN HIPPIES
Acoustic/wah wah with harmonica. Builds nicely in a slow, lazy, rocky manner. A little bit like a Rod Stewart track from his golden early '70s era.

6. ARMES EGALES
Noticeably French flavour to the circular chord pattern. Duelling flutes, and later horns, over a funky rhythm.

7. NOT WHY NOT
More of the inane 'la-la-la' stuff over a marching beat. Destroy.

(side two)

1. JOCKEY DISC
Driving freak out funk with flutes and horns over a churning funky beat/bass/wah wah. Cuts into an easy listening style female vocals break which is a little incongruous. Excellent high-energy track though.

2. MONTENEGRO-POP
Solid funky beat with tough horns and guitar. Applies a similar trick to track 3 on side 1: a quasi-medieval flute break in an odd time signature. Odd but works very well.

3. ROCKING-NICE
Bossa nova style with lilting female vocals and gentle acoustic gtr., tapping beat, flutes etc. Very pleasant.

4. POPART MONICA
Basically a sped-up Beatles bass line ('Day Tripper') plus a heavy, shuffling, funky beat/bass. Freak out jam session stuff. Good harmonica solo as the rhythm section keeps up the pressure.

5. KENNEDY AVENUE
Cheesy return of the 'la-la-la' stuff, this time with a trad jazz saxophone and an almost Small Faces type jaunty backing.

6. POP-PLAINE
'My Sweet Lord' guitar pattern rip off. Pleasant mid tempo mellow rock with crisp drums as ever.

7. POP-CIME
Shuffly, nondescript to begin with. Something of a 'western' flavour courtesy of the lilting harmonica. Gets harder and funkier as it progresses with heavier beat plus wah wah etc.

8. DJERBA-POP
Another not so subtle lift. On this one it's the Moody Blues' 'Nights In White Satin'. And for a third time Dauray uses the trick of alternating with a bizarre flutey/folky section (in this case more Peruvian than French).

For collectors of Library Music * and those looking for samples.

* 'Library Music' - music intended for use as backgrounds in film and television; albums like this were never released to the public.

'C. Dauray' would appear to be French but some of the titles here suggest some kind of Balkan/Yugoslav connection. Some excellent/unusual tracks on this crisply produced LP.
