POPOL VUH – Aguirre. Wah Wah Records LPS 158. Spanish release. NEW UNPLAYED VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1975 including music from the 1972 Werner Herzog movie plus additional material. Includes one bonus track. Remastered with original artwork and a liner note/photo insert. Comes housed in a clear outer resealable mylar sleeve; as shipped by the label. MUSICIANS:  Florian Fricke (piano, spinett), Daniel Fichelscher (electric & acoustic guitar, percussion), and Djong Yun (vocals). TRACKS:  Aguirre I (7:15), Morgengruss II (2:55), Aguirre II (6”15), Angus Dei (3:03), and Vergegenwaertigung (16:47). BONUS TRACK:  Aguirre III (7:16). DESCRIPTION:  The first collaboration between famed director Werner Herzog and Popol Vuh. Florian Fricke was approached by old friend Herzog to do the soundtrack for his third movie. Three years later, in 1975, after the international success of Herzog's film, Popol Vuh issued the album Aguirre. Although ostensibly a soundtrack album to Herzog's film, the six-track LP included only two songs (Aguirre I (L'Acrime Di Rei) and Aguirre II) taken from Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The four remaining tracks were derived from various recordings done by the group c. 1972–1974, including Morgengruss II, an update of a track from Ensjäger Und Siebenjäger. Popol Vuh’s “hypnotic music” for Aguirre met with considerable acclaim. Roger Ebert wrote, “The music sets the tone. It is haunting, ecclesiastical, human, and yet something else... The music is crucial to Aguirre, the Wrath of God..." AllMusic noted, “The film's central motif blends pulsing Moog and spectral voices conjured from Florian Fricke's Mellotron-related "choir organ" to achieve something sublime, in the truest sense of the word: it's hard not to find the music's awe-inspiring, overwhelming beauty simultaneously unsettling. The power of the legendary opening sequence of Herzog's film...owes as much to Popol Vuh's music as it does to the director's mise-en-scène.” Herzog explained how the choir-like sound was created, "We used a strange instrument, which we called a 'choir-organ.' It has inside it three dozen different tapes running parallel to each other in loops. ... All these tapes are running at the same time, and there is a keyboard on which you can play them like an organ so that [it will] sound just like a human choir but yet, at the same time, very artificial and really quite eerie." There have been several different editions of Aguirre and each has varied slightly or quite a lot from the original issue. Several reissues changed the last track (the 17 minute long Vergegenwärtigung) to include material from other Popol Vuh albums. Thanks to the accurate archive work of SPV on offer here is the original version of the album as it was first released in 1975. Limited edition featuring one bonus track, remastered sound and original artwork plus an insert with liner notes and photos. High quality vinyl pressing.

Wah Wah proudly presents the ultimate reissue series of the Popol Vuh discography made in coperation with Florian Fricke's family and SPV:  High quality pressings, most with rare bonus tracks, all include inserts with liners & rare period photos, high quality laminated gatefold and single pocket covers that faithfully reproduce the original artwork, and remastered from the original tapes __ top class legit editions for one of the big names in Kraut music. NOTE:  After Fricke’s passing, his wife, now in possession of the original tapes, licensed them to SPV of Germany who has issued remastered CD editions of his catalog and are now sub-licensing them to Wah Wah Records for limited edition vinyl pressings. So if you prefer CDs you will want to be sure to purchase the SPV editions.

Popol Vuh, the name, comes from the Mayan civilization and is the title of a corpus of mytho-historical narratives and writings of the Post Classic K'iche' kingdom in Guatemala's western highlands which tells the story of (their) creation. The title translates as Book of the Community, Book of Counsel, or more literally as Book of the People. Popol Vuh, the group, led by pianist and keyboardist Florian Fricke, was formed in 1969 and stayed active until Fricke's death in 2001. In 1969 Fricke joined forces with Holger Trülzsch (percussion) and Frank Fielder (synthesizer, recording engineer and technical assistance) and they soon became one of the most interesting bands of Kraut music's avant-garde, being pioneers in sounds that have later been categorized as ambient music, space / cosmic music or New Age music. From 1973, and for many years onward, former Amon Düül II drummer and guitarist Daniel Fischelscher became his main musical partner. Fricke also produced many soundtrack works for the movies of Werner Herzog.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:

It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal system it is beyond my control. With First-Class Package International Service my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery, though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
