POPOL VUH Affenstunde original German Liberty

Welcome! Here is a first German press of Popol Vuh Affenstunde (Liberty LBS 834601). This was the debut Popol Vuh album, with Florian Fricke and Holger Trülzsch the only two members of this new group. This album has a beautiful laminated gatefold sleeve, and terrific sound quality!

Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:

Side 1: C 83460 A-2; there is NO mother/stamper. “Made in Germany” is stamped into the dead wax.

Side 2: C 83460 B-1; again, there is no mother/stamper. We do again have “Made in Germany”.

Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?

Sleeve: The laminated gatefold sleeve grades EX+++. There is a VERY minor bend to the upper right corner, and only a few TINY laminate wrinkles. There is some VERY light surface wear to the inside left gatefold; again, VERY minor. Otherwise, it truly looks brand new, with a beautiful shine to the lamination. This album also exists with an unlaminated sleeve; I do not know which is earlier, but it sure looks better laminated! The sleeve is signed “Printed in Germany by C.v.d. Linnepe, Lüdenscheid.”

Vinyl: The vinyl is M-! This has nothing more than the random minor pops that are part of just about every 1970s German pressing. The vinyl is visually pristine as well.

Labels: Both labels are lovely, with NO spindle tracking. Clearly, this album has been played no more than a few times, and handled carefully.

Inner Sleeve: This album has a plain white plastic-lined inner sleeve that is very bright, but I do not know if this is the original inner. There is a seam split of about 2 inches on one edge, and a tape discoloration mark on one side. The code 3 29/48 is printed on one side; not sure if this is a date code.

And, in the end: As you may know, Affenstunde is not gentle and complex like later Popol Vuh albums; rather, it features VERY spacey Moog synthesizer. You will not find a better example of this album anywhere! Please e-mail me with any questions.
