For sale is an unbelievable scarce, original 1963 copy of The Popular Image Exhibition catalog and an accompanying lp, entitled, "Record of Interviews With Artists Participating In The Popular Image Exhibition: The Washington Gallery of Modern Art April 18 - June 2, 1963."
This is the catalog for the groundbreaking 1963 The Popular Image Exhibition (apparently the expression "Pop Art" hadn't yet been invented) at the short-lived and long-defunct Washington Gallery of Modern Art in Washington D.C., which featured a rather staggering number of important Pop and Post-Abstract Expressionist artists, including Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Claes Oldenburg, Jim Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Dine, George Brecht, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, John Wesley and Robert Watts, all of who are interviewed on the accompanying lp. Set comes with; a paper cover sleeve, featuring a design by Jim Dine, in blue (Condition is VG+... a small tear in the upper right hand corner, see photo); a 20-page booklet featuring photographs of artists, works exhibited and an essay by Alan Solomon; and the lp, which rates VG+++... a few very light sleeve scuffs short of NM. LP features a funny interview with Andy Warhol caught off guard at the opening, many intriguing interviews with artists at the exhibition and in their studios, etc. In superb condition, especially considering that the lp is held in a simple paper sleeve. Easily the rarest Andy Warhol-related lp, I have only been able to find one other example of this anywhere. I've been a serious crate digger in DC for 30 years and hadn't ever even heard of it until I stumbled upon it in a local estate. Great!
