Beschreibung
Kenny Burrells künstlerische Entwicklung ist gut dokumentiert, was seine Jahre mit Oscar Peterson und seine ersten Dates als Bandleader beim Label Blue Note betrifft, aber "God Bless The Child", seine einzige Arbeit für CTI 1971, ist ein zu wenig gehörtes Meisterstück unter seinen Werken. Zu Burrells Band bei diesen Aufnahmen gehören Bassist Ron Carter, Schlagzeuger Ray Barretto, Richard Wyands am Klavier, Flötist Hubert Laws, Trompeter Freddie Hubbard und der Trommler Billy Cobham. Der Haus-Arrangeur von CTI, Don Sebesky, schrieb die Arrangements für die Streicher und dirigierte sie in einer Weise, die sich seltsam schön von seinen sonstigen Arbeiten für dieses Label abhebt - Sebesky verstand Burrells absichtsvoll schlichte Art des Gitarrenspiels. Burrell gehörte nicht zu den Fusion-Musikern, aber er konnte besser grooven als sie alle zusammen. Sebesky errichtete eine düstere, atmosphärische Hintergrund-Geräuschkulisse, einerseits impressionistisch, andererseits dem Musiker Glanz verleihend, der sich hineingraben und sie zerlegen konnte - wie in seinen eigenen Kompositionen "Love Is the Answer" und "Do What You Gotta Do" - sie aber andererseits auch sanft und zärtlich umschmeicheln konnte wie beim Titelstück, dem wirklich großartigen "Be Yourself" und Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born".
