FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT DECLARES WAR 


THIS is an original 12-inch home-recorded acetate air check, off one of the national networks, containing most of the epochal speech of December 8th, 1941, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Delivered to a joint session of congress, this famous pronouncement marked America's entry into World War II.  


Most records of this historic speech are dubs, or dubs of dubs.  Not this: it's clearly a first-generation recording, taken directly off the air as the speech was being delivered.  The recordist tried to squeeze the whole speech onto one disc. Side one has the first four minutes intact. Side two has the recordist's strategic needle drops, omitting most of the wild applause, in order to get it all.  He succeeded, even having time to record some of the after-speech commentary. 


There are some other cuts made by (I'm guessing) the teen-aged son of the recordist and a pal, who use the remaining area for their goofy songs and "announcements." I estimate these were added in ca. 1943.  


This original 1941 RCA home recording acetate is in nominal V++ condition. Some of the tracks vary in condition, with more needle wear.  This disc has accumulated dust in the grooves, and it ought definitely to be carefully cleaned. Normally, I do this to enhance the appearance of a record, but I didn't want to risk water damage to the labels.

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
