THE PRETTY things had of course made their mark in the sixties as a poor man's Rolling Stones for whom they would always play second fiddle. Despite the fact they pretty much recorded the first ever concept album (beating the Who by several months) and had been hailed as freak-beat pioneers the band's following would never expand beyond a 'selective' few.
By the seventies they had changed style commencing with the albums 'Parachute' and 'Freeway Madness' before being rescued from the scrap heap by fans and business angels Led Zeppelin who signed them in 1974 directly to their recently inaugurated Swan Song label. It was the perfect home for the band who let their creative juices flow producing one of the best mid seventies rock albums of all time.
I would be perfectly happy to state that this is the best album that the Who never composed or recorded. The energy level is astounding and the songs are beautifully constructed and performed allowing front man Phil May to take the bull by the horns and lead a unit firing on all cylinders. Lead track 'Dream' merges perfectly into 'Joey' building from a humble lone piano cantor to a race car cruising top speed that would shame even Led Zeppelin. 'Is It Only Love' is a beautiful ballad built on aching vocals and lashings of lush strings - no, it's not a weepy tear-jerker, more of a triumphant celebration of love over tragedy. Best track of all though is 'Singapore Silk Torpedo' a rampaging, blockbuster or a rock song that evokes all the brilliance, pomposity and raw grit of the Who's 'Won't Get Fooled Again' - everything about this song is perfect from the guitar riff to May's cock sure vocals.
Ok, so it ain't rare but it is essential. One of the best and now long forgotten classics of British rock. You will not regret buying this one I can assure you!
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl: Nice clean and shiny condition. No spindle marks and no other signs of use. Grades as a strong MINT-!
Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Sharp corners, one tiny almost invisible ding lower right corner, no bends, no ring wear (virtually impossible to find without!), no split seams and no creases. Firm and straight spine. White cover is superb - tough to find in nice shape but this one is great. Grades as almost shop fresh MINT-!
