ARCHIVAL OVERVIEW
Up for auction is an exceptionally scarce grail piece for classical ballet score collectors and analog purists: an authentic Speakers Corner Records factory test pressing/sample sleeve copy of the legendary 1957 stereo recording of Serge Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Ballet, Op. 64 (Excerpts), performed by Dimitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
This rare piece features the official, original Speakers Corner production data sheet permanently affixed to the reverse side of the jacket. Prepared inside their German headquarters in anticipation of the February 2014 master release window, it outlines critical matrix tracking information, price codes, and recording provenance documenting the historic November 1957 sessions captured by engineers Fred Plaut and Stan Tonkel, and produced by Howard H. Scott.
Because test pressings represent the absolute first stampers pulled directly from the fresh matrix to evaluate audio integrity before commercial factory runs, they hold a revered place among high-fidelity collectors. They represent the absolute closest possible physical replication of the original master tape.
REPERTOIRE & PERFORMANCE NOTES
Dimitri Mitropoulos was an uncompromising champion of modern repertoire, often pushing musical boundaries further than the record labels of his era preferred. This recording from his late New York period serves as definitive proof of his immense artistic vision.
Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet suites feature some of the most richly orchestrated, dramatic, and emotionally charged music ever written for the stage. Under Mitropoulos’s baton, the New York Philharmonic delivers a performance of stunning contrast—moving seamlessly from the light, carefree gaiety of a "Folk Dance" and the lyrical sweetness of the "Love Theme," right into the grim, hard, and terrifyingly intense orchestral vehemence of "The Death of Tybalt." Recorded at the St George Hotel in Brooklyn, this legendary stereophonic masterwork boasts an incredible acoustic soundstage with a depth and punch that beautifully underlines the greatness of the Greek maestro.
