Safe At Home
...USA - LHI Records advance release PROMOTIONAL
(1968)
....................................................................................................
ULTRA RARE 1967 ADVANCE RELEASE PROMOTIONAL VINYL of the breakthrough GRAM PARSONS led rural band pre-dating his work with THE BYRDS and as good as his best work with The Flying Burrito Brothers 1st Lp "Guilded Palace Of Sin"...in glorious MONO!
The rare monaural issue contains different song mixes from the stereo issue and also the MONO edition has that big bold deep punch in the sound production!
Stellar stuff ... much like The Gilded Palace of Sin, much like Sweetheart of the Rodeo, this amazes for the grasp that young Gram Parsons had on American rural rock and early rhythm and blues. Essential for anyone into Parsons and his various bands, or into alternative rural rock. This is a gem that grows nicely with repeat plays!.
Gram Parsons has as legitimate claim as anyone for recording the first rural-rock album with this late-1967 recording by the International Submarine Band before jumping ship to join the Byrds on their SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO project.
The standout tracks are the self-penned gems like "Blue Eyes" (which was released as a single), "Luxury Liner" (which Parsons devotee Emmylou Harris would cover a decade later), and "Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome" (which Parsons would revisit on the Flying Burrito Brothers' debut).
There are equally strong performances on covers of Merle Haggard's "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" and Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone."
The band is joined on these recordings by Jay Dee Maness on steel guitar, Earl "Les" Ball on keys, and future Burrito Brother Chris Ethridge on bass. The album is pure, raw rural sounds that became the template for all the hip rural rock bands that followed in their wake. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
International Submarine Band: Gram Parsons (vocals, guitar); Bob Buchanan (guitar, background vocals); John Nuese (guitar); J.D. Maness (pedal steel guitar); Earl Ball (piano); Jon Corneal (drums).
