Description
ONE of the rarest of Victors by the great 1927 JEAN GOLDKETTE AND HIS ORCHESTRA is "PROUD OF A BABY LIKE YOU." With a superb, sixteen-bar hot cornet solo by BIX BEIDERBECKE, and a cute-corny vocal by The Keller Sisters & Lynch, it moves along jauntily and copacetically.
What makes this record so rare is that it was issued ONLY from Victor's West Coast pressing plant, in Oakland, California. East coasters never knew about it! Only about 9,500 copies were sold in 1927, as opposed to about 180,000 copies of "I'm Gonna Meet My Sweetie Now." You can imagine how scarce it is today!
(n.b.: Note the tiny letter "o" at the top of the label, between Nipper and the Victrola horn. This indicates an Oakland pressing. ALL copies of this record bear this peculiar mark.)*
"I LOVE YOU, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHY" by NAT SHILKRET AND THE VICTOR ORCHESTRA is on the flip side, making it just as rare!
This original 1927 "Scroll" "West Coast" Victor 20469 is in E condition. The label is a little bruised, and there is a light scratch on "Proud." Otherwise, a bonny copy!
* Faithful eBayer and critic, "victortalkingmachine," reports TWO copies of this record, WITHOUT the Oakland "o." This hints at national distribution for Victor 20469 - but only deepens the mystery: So, WHY did only 9,500 copies sell? Most Goldkette releases sold a respectable 50,000 copies, more or less. SOMETHING held up the distribution of this one!

Bix, in the center, focusing directly at the camera, looks a little hung over, and about three days into wearing the same suit. He and the other Goldketters seem supremely nonchalant in the presence of the deadly snake in the zookeeper's hands!

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!
