Sometimes it almost sounds like Justin Hayward himself is providing backing vocals, if not lead vocals. Have a listen to the lead vocals on the second track "Mountain", or the backing vocals on the next track "Lady", and you will probably find yourself reaching for the LP jacket and sleeve, looking for credited Moodies. Even though the music was indeed  performed and written by the members of Providence, it was "Moodified" by the presence of producer Tony Clarke. Clarke produced every Moody Blues album from Days Of Future Passed up through Octave, so it makes sense that some of the same sound-capturing techniques and sensibilities would have been employed when Providence convened in Hollywood to record Ever Sense The Dawn.

Standing in contrast to the Moody Blues, however, was the instrumental constitution of Providence. They were a quasi-baroque sextet which largely eschewed the use of electronic instruments, and were conspicuously mellotron-free, instead employing instrumentation more suited to string quartet performances. Most notably, however, they had no drummer, instead using only light percussion, thus Providence were tagged as a "soft rock" band, although I would argue that their compositions were at least slightly more involved and interesting.

Providence was effectively "led" by one Bartholomew Bishop, who played piano, autoharp, harpsichord, RMI and organ, and who penned a good percentage of Ever Sense The Dawn. He was joined by (mostly acoustic) guitarist Andy Guzie, who was also a significant compositional contributor. Brothers Tim and Tom Tompkins played cello, recorders, percussion, viola and violin, while Jim Cockey added viola and glockenspiel. The band was rounded out warmly by bassist Bob Barriatua, who consequently was the only member of Providence who did not pursue a career in music after the band parted ways, choosing instead to study in medicine and eventually becoming a doctor.  

Although Ever Sense The Dawn did indeed appeal to milder sensibilities, it still comes across as a solid album overall, with finely-wrought musicianship and a suite-like presentation. The focus is patently pastoral, with plentiful lyrical references to mountains, the seasons, the sun, the sea, streams, trees, breezes, rainbows, prisms, angels, mothers, children, mirrored pools of love and islands of light. "Smile" and the closing track "Behold: A Solar Sonnet" are probably the most quickly accessible tunes, but really the whole album works quite well and is still worth a listen four decades on, especially on crisp and golden autumn afternoons.   WHY NOT CHECK OUT MY EBAY STORE -
