For collectors of Library Music * and those looking for samples.

* 'Library Music' - music intended for use as backgrounds in film and television; albums like this were never released to the public.

This much sought-after 1974 Library LP is on the PSI imprint of the French Musique Pour L'Image label. This copy also bears the traces of its distribution in the UK by C. Brull of London (stickers on disc labels and also on back of sleeve). Compositions throughout by Claude Vasori.

Here are my notes on the tracks:

Squall - insistent double speed rhythm; tense and building with abrasive Hammond organ stabs the main instrumental feature other than the drums.

Ionic - an effected tremolo electric guitar picks out slow arpeggiated chords, punctuated by phased cymbal rolls; great atmosphere.

Scrabble - fastish drama-style beats, insistent/simple bass, exciting/tense piano and fuzz electric guitar.

Shafting - lovely Hammond chord pads with moody bass and hihat-dominated drums, topped off with a driving, funky wah wah guitar; very nice.

Wheel - continues the bitter-sweet chordal mood of the previous track but in 3/4 time; features flowery electric guitar and jazzy ride cymbal drumming; lovely.

Hurt One - dirty, exciting, drama-oriented jazz/rock; insistent, menacing riffs punctuated by frequent drum rolls.

Hurt Two - shorter, continuously-riffed (no drum rolls) version of the same thing.

Sybernetic - abstract, beautiful, rolling, in 6/8 time; features vibes and Hammond over brushed drums, bass etc. ; brilliant.

Ozone - very moody and melancholy; galloping, jazzy ride-cymbal-driven drums, jangly electric guitar and vibes melody all suggest a French seaside resort in the rain, out of season, whatever; beautiful.

Splash - bass guitar and toms concoct a tense rhythm, punctuated by Hammond stabs of increasing intensity and excitement; there's a weird high human voice element to the stabs as well (Mellotron?); real 'freak out' stuff.

Pang - fast, jazzy drums with bongos, overlaid with ascending Hammond organ notes and insistent, simple, stabbing guitar/bass; very moody and excellent.

Turbine - exciting drums, bass, Hammond and wah wah drive this fastish drama piece along very nicely.

Shock One - frenetic bongos and fast, jazzy drumming all the way on this one (no other instrumentation); very exciting and with more than a suggestion of the rhythmic feel of modern-day drum & bass music about it.

Shock Two - carries on where the first version left off but this is a call-and-response work out between the bongo player and the drummer (wild drum rolls answering the bongo rolls).

Huff One - abrasive piano, bass guitar combine with rolling toms; very exciting, original drama feel.

Huff Two - similar, but drops the piano in favour of a jabbing, filtered Hammond
organ; mad.

Invisibility - brisk, rolling bongos and ride cymbal drumming underpin a delightfully moody piece, featuring creamy bass, lyrical piano and electric guitar; beautiful.

Boom - moody, menacing timpani rolls
