Alongside Blur's The Great Escape and Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory, Pulp's Different Class album is one of the defining Britpop records of 1995. The Sheffield band led by the remarkable Jarvis Cocker might be a little artier and nuanced than Blur or Oasis were at that time but in terms of the culture around the songs and the audiences driven to listen to their music they are cut from a very similar cloth. Pulp have evolved a lot since this album and are arguably a more interesting band for it, but there's no shame in a bit of nostalgia in blasting 'Disco 2000', 'Common People' or 'Mis-Shapes' and singing along at the top of your lungs. Many bands have come and tried to write pop as brilliantly, but rarely does it happen. They make it seem effortless and Jarvis has that skill of making it feel like he's singing about a moment in your life, making it all the more impactful. This was a life changing album for Pulp and for so many of its listeners it brings a form of companionship and catharsis.
