SCLP 9084 - Latin Dance Party, Volume 5 - Pupi Campo and his Orchestra [1957]

PUPI CAMPO ORQUESTA:

Jacinto Campillo (Pupi was his nickname, and he later compressed his last name) was born in Havana on May 1, 1920, to Jacinto and Delores Trujillo Campillo.

Several Latin musicians who went on to become stars played in Mr. Campo’s band, among them Tito Puente, Joe Loco, Jimmy “La Vaca” Rodriguez and Cachao López. (MY NOTE: ALL IN THIS EARLY RECORDING!) He came to New York when he was 20 and was soon performing as a dancer at a Manhattan nightclub. There he met Diosa Costello, a stage actress, whom he married a year later. Through Ms. Costello, Mr. Campo met the columnist Walter Winchell, who suggested that he become a bandleader.

It was a good idea. In a 2003 review of bands from the past, Latin Beat magazine wrote of “the infernal heat radiated” by the Campo band

THE GREAT SEECO LABEL….PERHAPS THE BIGGEST & GREATEST “DEPOSITORY” OF LATIN-AMERICAN MUSIC!!!

Label founded '43 by Sidney Siegel (d '69), who operated the Joyeria Siegel, a jewelry store at 115th St and 5th Ave NYC, which also sold records. During WWII shellac was rationed and most Latin labels had to stop production and ran out of inventory; Siegel recorded some material and pressed Seeco records in Canada. Eventually he recorded La Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz, Daniel Santos, Bobby Capo, Miguelito Valdes, Machito, Cortijo, Vicentico Valdes, Roberto Faz, Cesar Concepcion, Cuban All-Stars, Joe Cuba, Rene Grand, Chuito Velez (including some of Adalberto Santiago's earliest recorded work), Rey Roig, Alberto Beltran, Rey Caney, Los Compadres, Celio Gonzalez, Bienvenido Granda, Joe Loco, Antonio Machin, Septeto Nacional, Leo Marini, Celeste Mendoza, Noro Morales, Orquesta America del 55, Nelson Pinedo and others, releasing the first Latin 12” LPs '54. There were so many recordings that subsidiary Tropical label was formed to retail at 99 cents; this catalogue also incl. Tito Puente, Perez Prado, Tito Rodriguez (with Morales), Charlie Palmieri and Pupi Campo (featuring Puente and Joe Loco). Siegel's cousin, Howard Roseff, was his right-hand man, dubbed 'King of the Compilations' by Alegre's Al Santiago; Roseff would put together twelve tunes by Rafael Hernandez or Agustin Lara or Ernesto Lecuona recorded by Seeco's various artists for a 'Best Of So And So'; he would look through the titles of hundreds of Seeco 78s and pull out any song about 'mama' and prepare a Mother's Day LP, or twelve love songs for a Valentine's Day set. There was also a tremendous overlap of tracks on different LPs by the same artist. In the '90s Roseff was Atlantic City rep for Disc Makers, a record/cassette/CD manufacturer based in Philadelphia. In the early '50s, singer/producer Ruben Morales produced big hits for Seeco with Johnny Rodriguez (Tito's older brother), Carmen Delia Dipini and Trio Maravilla; at one year's Christmas party Siegel offered Morales a bonus of a few dollars: Morales told him where he could put his bonus and quit on the spot. Seeco was sold to David Last (Met Richmond?), an ex-big-band drummer, who was located in Boca Raton, Florida; it is currently leased to Polygram in the USA.

BY 1949 TITO PUENTE LEFT PUPI'S BAND TO PERFORM SOME "EXTRA" WORK PERFORMING ON SUNDAYS AFTERNOONS (THAT WAS HIS EXCUSE...JUST A PART TIME!!!!!...)THE PROBLEM HE ALSO CONVINCED JIMMY NEVADA AND PUPI's PIANO PLAYER LUIS VARONA TO PARTICIPATE....AFTER AN ARGUMENT, HE LEFT PUPI AFTER FEDERICO PAGANI (NEW YORK FAMOUS PRODUCER) TOLD HIM TO FORM A NEW BAND...THE HISTORICALLY FAMOUS "PICADILLY BOYS"...JOE LOCO ALSO LEFT PUPI (1951) AFTER HE WAS CONVINCED BY TICO'S OWNER GEORGE GOLDNER TO FORM HIS OWN BAND....JOE RECORDED A BIG HIT "TENDERLY" WHILE STILL WITH CAMPO....ANOTHER BLOW TO PUPI...THAT WAS MUSIC BUSINESS!

SEECO PRESSED THIS LP FIRST ON A 1950 10" LP, THEN ON ITS SUBSIDIARY TROPICAL IN THE MID 60s...THIS COVER SHOWS A DIFFERENT ORIGINAL DESIGN, THE "TROPICAL" SHOWS A DRAWING OF PUPI WEARING HIS "PANAMA" HAT...SEE AN EBAY POSTING OF THE REISSUE:

"En octubre de 1947 Loco dejó la Samba Band para organizar la banda de Jack López. Unos pocos meses después, Puente también partió para trabajar con la orquesta de Pupi Campo como percusionista, arreglista, y manager de negocios. Un anochecer, Loco sustituyó al pianista de Campo, Al Escobar. Eso produjo lo que fue un evento histórico impensadamente no grabado. El solo de piano de Loco era extremadamente caliente, y el timbal de Puente y el trabajo de cáscara de Johnny “La Vaca” Rodríguez hicieron un sonido excitante y exótico que llevaba al delirio. Near Mint (NM)

(Jacket) If the jacket is sealed there may be some minor corner damage from storage, it may or may not have the shrink-wrap, but the jacket itself will be in pristine condition. The corners will show very little wear (there will be no fraying) and will still be somewhat pointy to the touch. The cover will show no more than very minor dents or some single creases, no full bends that will cause multiple creases/damage. There will be no visible ring wear. No writing, rips or tears on the cover or seams. No bubbling, water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. The inside of the gate-fold will be in the same condition. Cutout bin punches, price stickers, staples would start being listed at the NM category and would be noted accordingly as they affect the jacket itself.

(LP) You should not hear any surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain that just opened appearance. There may be a surface blemish or two, but they will not have any affect on the sound. There will be no warping. There will be no major blemishes, light or deep scratches. The label will be free of writing and stains. There should be no spindle marks.

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink-wrap but the jacket itself will still be in beautiful condition. The corners will have minimal wear (no fraying).There may be minor dents and creases . Light scratches could be on the jacket, but nothing severe. Depending on age some discolor/yellowing may show, but will not be overbearing. Ring wear should be very minimal or non-existent...no dark, full, half, or quarter rings. No writing rips or tears. No bubbling, water stains or peeling of the cover . All inner gate-folds will be in similar condition.

(LP) You should not hear any sustained surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain its most of it's glossiness and will appear like new. There may be a few surface blemishes, or a stray light scratch that may cause a moment of crackling, but nothing prolonged, and instances of this will be few. Often this will mostly occur only at the beginning of the groove on each side where the needle dropped. There will be no warping. There will be no deep scratches. There may be minor spotting or fog, but it will not affect the sound. The label will be free of writing and stains. Minimal spindle marks.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap. There may be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear and there may be the beginnings of fraying but not full on. Some dents/creases or scratches may be noticeable, but nothing too pronounced. There could be noticeable discolor/yellowing .There may be some minor ring wear at the top and bottom; again you would have to look for it. No writing, rips or tears. Possibly some light bubbling. No water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way.

(LP) There may be some blemishes, maybe a scratch or two, but nothing too deep. It will not cause the record to skip or repeat. There will be no prolonged surface noise. There may be some minor warping but it will have no affect on the listening experience at all. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.

The corners will have some wear or fraying possibly causing seam splitting close to the seam. There may be split seams on any side. Usually not full side splits though. Sometimes they may be fixed by tape, sometimes not. Some dents/creases or scratches will be noticeable on the jacket, sometimes pronounced. Discolor and yellowing can be commonplace, as are smaller water/mold stains and some bubbling. There maybe a smaller tear on the cover, but nothing overly pronounced. Ring wear will certainly be pronounced. There may be some writing/defacing, but it will be minor.

(LP) There will be some blemishes, and some few scratches. They should not be at the feel-able stage though. There could be a skip or repeat, but only one or two at most. More often the deeper scratches will cause more frequent and prolonged surface noise. There may be some warping but it will not cause the needle to jump. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG/VG- record will obviously have been played and occasionally handled roughly by the original owner.
