Background -
Among the earliest and most influential Delta bluesmen to record, Skip James was the best-known proponent of the so-called Bentonia school of blues players, a genre strain invested with as much fanciful scholarly "research" as any. Coupling an oddball guitar tuning set against eerie, falsetto vocals, James' early recordings could make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Even more surprising was when blues scholars rediscovered him in the '60s and found his singing and playing skills intact. Influencing everyone from a young Robert Johnson (Skip's "Devil Got My Woman" became the basis of Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail") to Eric Clapton (who recorded James' "I'm So Glad" on the first Cream album), Skip James' music, while from a commonly shared regional tradition, remains infused with his own unique personal spirit. - Cub KodaAs quiet as it was kept then, Skip James might have made the best music of anyone who resurfaced during the mid-'60s "rediscovery" era for Mississippi country blues types. The opening track alone, "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues", is worth this purchase. A more spooky, haunting, emotional song does not exist.
You might not know anything about this record. You may never have heard of Skip James. You might not think you like blues. You might not normally listen to recommendations. But if ever you're going to take some advice, now's the time – BUY THIS RECORD. You can't miss.
Nehemiah "Skip" James is one of the Delta Blues giants and one of the genre's earliest recording artists. He was born in Bentonia, Mississippi in 1902 and began his recording career in 1931 for the Paramount Records label – the same Grafton, Wisconsin-based company that cut the ultra-famous sides by Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, Blind Blake and pretty much every other pre-war blues artist that's still remembered today.
After that Paramount session and its resulting 26 sides, James went relatively unheard of for the next 33 years. He followed in his father's footsteps and became a Baptist minister. But in 1964, three record collectors went in search of Skip James and found him. The three booked him at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, and James' comeback was born. Thank God for that! This record was recorded shortly after the rediscovery. Amazingly, James' musicianship was still utterly remarkable, even though his health had begun to fail and he would die just five years later. What sets Skip James' talent apart, aside from his equal mastery of both the guitar and piano, is his haunting falsetto singing. You've got to hear it for yourself. This record allows us a glimpse into a long-gone world.

Note however that the "taken from CD" credit was insisted upon by the licensor rather than a reflection of the actual source: the source material for the release - according to mastering engineer Kevin Gray - was analog tape.
CONDITION Details:
The LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket has NO seam splits. The corners and seams are solid, with some very minor shelf wear along the seams and corners. The colors on the jacket are sharp.
The LP is in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this LP. There are no significant marks and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen - there may be some very light spider marks on the vinyl, caused by sliding the LP in and out of the inner sleeve. There may be some dust and the odd finger print on the vinyl. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels. A finer copy would be difficult to find!
A Short Note About LP GRADING - - Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
