Original and obscure vinyl pressing only, with detailed liner notes. Amazing acetates and private pressing UK Freakbeat and Psychedelia. omewhere at a secret location in the heart of England's green and pleasant land sits a very helpful person ( to us music listeners ) who collects acetates of 1960s beat, R&B, freakbeat and psychedelia. Not rare singles, rare acetates. It can't be an easy hobby, in most cases only one or two acetates of a recording are ever made, either as publisher's demos or as a reference copy for the band to take home after a session - mush as today we would take home a cassette. Thirty years after the fact, few acetates have survived in any kind of playable condition, so collecting them is a challenging task to say the least. However the rewards are great as acetates often feature obscure or totally unreleased recordings and perhaps hold the only recorded work by an unknown but possibly totally genius band. Luckily this person is willing to share his obscenely rare bounty with the world in the form of the Purple Heart Surgery series. Volume Two is every bit the equal of its excellent predecessor. Kicking off with the hard organ-driven freakbeat of the Sonic Invasion and featuring a dozen or so more strong tracks, some so obscure the band's identity was not even designated on the acetate's label. The "unknowns" include a tough, fuzz throbber called "I'm Gonna Have My Fun," and the Who-ish "(I Am) The Letterman." Also of merit is "All" by the Soul Proprietors, an ultra-crude slow tempo Punk R&B clomper, complete with out-of-tune guitars, smashing tambourine and some basic piano fills. Unlike most of the tracks here, this was actually released, though only as a very limited private label effort in association with Reading University's Rag Week, circa 1965. Other highlights include the catchy "My Little Girl" by the Prophets, a high-paced cover of the Riot Squad's "Anytime" by the Men Friday, and a gritty soul/R&B workout by Warren Davis & the Boardwalkers (in 1967, as the Warren Davis Monday Band, this group released "Wait For Me," produced and co-written by Bill Wyman). All in all, a killer collection, that wasn’t around long, so if unfortunately you didn’t  act fast, you prob missed it?
